Raycaster
I have a 2007 Ford Edge SE 180k, front wheel drive 3.5.When turning LEFT from a stop the car will rev/clatter just before it reaches 2nd gear. It does not affect speed or tach jumps. I could burn rubber straight ahead and there would be no sound and the transmission will purr. The car is producing no error codes and runs perfect except for this noise. It will sometimes reproduce this noise when cold going straight but quickly goes away. There are no steering whines. At the Ford Plant they ruled out transmission/1/2 shaft/bearings/ steering etc. In fairness they didn't have the time to put it on hoist to have a true look. Its been at my local trusted mechanic for 3 days and he basically have given up and want to wait for codes instead of guessing. So to sum up the problem:A high reving/valve clattering engine noise as the transmission is switching from 1st to 2nd TURNING LEFT at slow speed. Rarely right and never straight. It really sounds like a engine noise more than tranny.Any ideas guys?Thank you https://clyp.it/40u2k3nt https://clyp.it/bupdm1zl Edited April 15, 2016 by Raycaster
enigma-2
I read in another forum where someone else was having an identical problem. (Only hapoened when starting out and turning left). Turned out it was the transmission drive chain. Think it cost him $1300 but different brand of car. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Does your mechanic have access to ChassisEARS or some such product, that would help localize the sound. I would suspect axle/CV joint, then maybe the power steering system.
Raycaster
Thank you very much for the quick replies. I'm going down to talk to the mechanic now. I'm going to try to isolate the noise and post it. Sometimes it really loud (usually when making a uphill left turn, stress from the incline and steering). I hope waiting for a engine code won't aggravate the problem. Its been happening for a month and basically has not got audibly worse. Again, thank you very much,
macbwt
Is the sway bar link solid? sometimes they break and unless you pull on it you would not see that is it broken. Also do you recognize the noise of an antilock brake activation. Might be strange but when turning the wheel speed interpretation could cause the antilock to activate quickly.
