greeneye150
can the sport mode be used for prolonged periods of time or will that damage anything?
omar302
Sport mode is simply a program with some different parameters like allowing the tranny to hold gear more (shift at a higher RPM). There has never been any mention that it might have any adverse affect nor would Ford have added the feature if it did.
037
I use Sport mode 100% of the time. It's different tranny logic, that's all. No harm while warranty is in place ;-)

luminator
IF you will be holding speed for a long period of time(highway) you will hurt your gas mileage as it will not shift to 6th in sport unless you use the paddles to do so.

037
Wait...won't shift to 6? First time I hear of this...never saw the RPM climb very high so did not suspect this, will test... Is this in the manual somewhere?
037
I see nothing in the manual for 6th gear lockout, page
cds71
Not sure about the 6th gear issue....guess it all depends on revs.....but back to the fuel millage....I was cruising at 75 mph and forgot it was in sport, then I checked my fuel millage for the whole trip back (in D mode) and the difference was around 4 mpg. 037
Guess I'm gonna have to try regular mode, see how I like it...4 mpg is major if it doesn't bother me. I am used to 11-12mpg so I thought this was in acceptable range.
greeneye150
seems like i average 17 no matter what mode im in, but i would agree on a long trip i dont need sport mode
cds71
seems like i average 17 no matter what mode im in, but i would agree on a long trip i dont need sport mode I was talking purely highway miles.....and I usually get between 29 to 31 mpg on highway cruising (in drive mode) at 75 mph....in (Sport mode) I believe I was getting 26 mpg....all over a 1.5 hour drive one way (1.5 hours in Sport mode and 1.5 hours in Drive mode). Granted around town I dont think it makes much of a difference(driving style would be the huge factor).
luminator
IF you are conscious of it you can use the paddles to force it to 6th but it will not shit there on its own.
037
Tried driving in regular mode and was fairly disgusted. Pushing pedal provides noticeably less power and irritates me... Need to prove out that the gas savings are trivial before I can go back exclusively back to Sport. Would be annoyed if the difference is more than 2 mpg. cds71
Keeping it in Drive mode would only really help with fuel mileage on the highway. In town I keep it in sport mode 95% of the time.

037
Went out for a drive this morning round 6am, regular mode with fairly gentle throttle, 19mpg, returned the same way with traffic and less gentle throttle and some bursts in Sport for passing, 18mpg combined trip. There are benefits to this mode in mpg, can't stand it for the state of mind I am usually in which is to have a little fun and have power ready without having to shift anything. No idea what paddles are for, car shifts perfectly in S and needs a harder kick in D Edited April 6, 2016 by
akirby
Paddles are more to keep it from shifting rather than shifting it yourself. E.g coming down a steep mountain where S gearing isn't low enough. Or holding a lower gear through the twisties.
Nick Halstead
I get about 20mpg in sport mode. I have been driving the car last 2 weeks and the wife has been taking the fusion hybrid back and forth to waikiki, fusion mpg has gone up to 36mpg from my 30mpg and her Sport has dropped from 22mpg to 20.5 right now. akirby
I drove the new MKX to dinner last night using Sport mode. I liked it but the wife complained that the engine sounded louder than before. Oh well - I can still use it when I'm by myself!

037
I guess I have it easy akirby, my wife used to complain about hard down shifts, none present in the Edge even after a tune. The last car was a lot louder
POWERSTROKE
The first '15 Edge we had was 3.5L V-6 powered. Couple hills on some local roads the trans would drop from 6th to 4th to hold speed in one shift when using cruise control. I played with sport mode and was able to pull the hills in 5th without having to buzz the engine at 4200 rpm. The new '15 Edge with the turbo-4 pulls all but the steepest hill or two in 6th, drops into 5th on the steepest hills. Haven't needed to play with sport mode.
