Transmission or power steering leak

2012 FWD with 54,000 miles. Is this transmission leak "normal" for this vehicle? There is a 3rd party warranty in effect until 60,000 and I am trying to decide if I should investigate if the leak should be fixed. It will cost me $100 to make a "claim" so I am asking if others have a similar leak. Leak appears to come from the center gasket seal in the middle of picture. Thanks

You can dye the tranny fluid to verify it is transmission fluid leaking. but based on what I know from this type of leak it is not the transmission. Look to the left and up and you will see the rear main seal to the engine shaft is located there. My assumption is if it is not transmission fluid you have a leaking rear main seal on your engine.

This just happen on my 2011 Ford Edge Limited. Same leak area, took to the dealer. they did the dye in the transmission ruled out the transmission and was the rear main seal. Total cost to replace seal 1600.00 . luckily my warranty had 1000 miles left and a month, so only paying 100 deductible.

is it normal for this seal to go bad. car barely reached 100,000.00

Rare issue. My 2008 had a leaking rear main seal but it had over 200K miles on it. My current 2011 has 158K miles and no leaking seal.

My 2007 at 109,000 is dry as a bone. At 54,000 miles and under warrantee I would have it fixed. At my mileage I wouldn't fix it for $1600. I would leave it like my wife's Grand Cherokee and put a rubber mat under it with speedy dry. Of course it depends on the volume of the leak. a few drops a week is what I'm talking about. Not noticeable on the dip stick between oil changes and just a pain in the ass on the garage floor.

I hate leaks but I hate big repair bills more.

Just start using high mileage oil with additional seal protection. The seal additives will help swell the seals and slow the seepage. I would not worry about it unless you are losing a lot of oil (2-3 quarts over 5k miles) My 2008 had that for over 150K miles and it never really lost a lot of oil. Less than a quart every 5K miles. Cheaper to just add a bit more oil.

Looking at this one again. Vehicle now has 66,500 miles. I believe the fluid leak is coming from the power steering pressure hose. Probably either the banjo bolt or at the transition from the hardline to hose. Anyone know the torque spec for the banjo bolt? If it is leaking here then the fluid would have to be running forward. Anyone have some input on if I am heading down the right path?

Here is the leak looking forward:

Banjo Bolt:

Hardline - here is my best guess of the source of the leak:
