CharPatton
Hi: Can anyone explain the difference here? I have an awesome 95 Explorer that has true 4WD, and the low setting has come in very handy sometimes. Parts are getting to be an issue, however, so we are looking to replace and downsize. It seems that the Explorer does not come in true 4WD anymore. The 2016 Edge has AWD. The 2017 Escape is advertising 4WD. Advice appreciated. Is it worth waiting for the 2017 Escape to get true 4WD, possibly with a low setting? Thank you!
akirby
There is no difference in the escape, edge or explorer AWD systems regardless of what they call it. They're all FWD biased and can only shift torque to the rear for short periods, there is no center differential or locking diffs. There are some smart electronics to manage it in different situations but not true 4wd like your old explorer.
omar302
The AWD (4WD) system of the 2017 is probably the same as the 2016. Between the Edge & the Escape, the AWD system should not be a factor for choosing 1 over the other, both probably have the same all wheel drive capabilities. The Explorer, on the other hand, even though it doesn't have a true 4WD system, it does have a the terrain management system, which is software based, but will help in certain situation better than a AWD vehicle without it.
