mdy113
I am looking to buy '16 edge, and had question regarding remote start. Being it has sync 3, will wit be able to be equppied with similar remote starting from app when connect goes live with '17 escapes coming up? Or are you stuck with only the fob remote start. Wondering if 16s edges can be fitted similarly. I know escapes coming shortly will have this feature. Lot of other brands do it too, I.e. Hyundai blue link
candurin
I have the Ford remote access (remote start from android or iPhone) app on my phone and starts my '12 edge, no problem. You simply have to by the the ford remote access kit for your remote start. Unless the sync 3 has this built in?
mdy113
This is not the same, look up sync connect debuting with '17 escape. Will be service similar to Hyundai blue link, GM OnStar etc. With a lot of features, one of them being remote start via sync connect app. I think free too. Anyway, diff than the Ford remote access. candurin
My bad! Quite jealous of the new sync system.
jwm22222
I can see that if it gave you a free wifi hotspot that would be something great. You could take advantage of Spotify, Pandora and things like that without using all of your data. As far as the four things they are advertising now, I just don't see the big deal. This is not one of those cases where I feel like I should have waited for the 2017 Edge. Thank goodness. Maybe there's something I'm missing. FordIVTteam
Hey everyone! The current SYNC 3 does not have an embedded modem that allows remote features. SYNC Connect has a different modem and is not available as an aftermarket installation. As candurin suggested, you can use Ford Remote Access for similar features through your smartphone: http://www.fordremoteaccess.com/en/ Shaay
jmr061
I just installed a Remote Access system in my 16 Edge Sport and can confirm that it works. Just a pain to reach up and plug in the main harness plug that gets connected.
Tjm623
I got a '16 edge with fob remote start my wife got the '17 escape. Had I not been messing around in her dash menu and saw all the remote start features we would have never known. I looked online and found out about sync connect. This feature is ten times better you don't have to be anywhere near the car to turn it on and can even set a scheduled start for a time of day.... Needless to say I think I'll be getting the garage spot from now on! I'll gladly schedule her starts in the winter and "scrape the car" with my thumb pressing the app in bed! Tacyon
Ninja'd by Shaay. The ability to remote from your phone requires a cellular modem in the vehicle. There are aftermarkets systems that do just that, add a modem and patch into the vehicle. Not sure about our Fords tho. I looked into engineering one myself. It'd be a simple remote start from long distances, but decided the benefits wasn't worth the retro engineering that I'd have to do. This Sync3 Connect feature (if it works reliably and is intuitive) sounds like a nice addition. Other manufactures have had this function for years. knux11
what's the difference between this and remote access above in post #8? the latter seems to already be available. remote access does not provide a wifi hotspot. smartlink does. akirby
And smart link just plugs into the old-II port.
ThunderTruck
From a totally non tech person with a 2016 Edge I went into the dealer to get the $120 module to allow use of the remote start app, I was told that I would need an additional $300 module to the use of the app. It would be nice but not $420 plus labour nice. IIRC you can't completely do a self install because the dealer has to program stuff, correct?
