Buying a 2016 Edge - wavering between the Titanium and the Sport

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

First post here, but I've done a lot of browsing over the last weeks!

I'm going to be graduating into the Ford Edge family soon. I was going to get a 2015, but after actually using the Sync 3 recently I've decided that it's worth jumping into a 2016 instead.

However, I'm very much wavering between the Titanium FWD and the Sport.

Advantages in the Titanium, as I see them:

  • 2.0L v4 turbo engine drives very similarly to the v6 that is available outside of the Sport, and beats the Sport by a ~4mpg on average, especially since they've done away with FWD on the 2016 sport.
  • Cost savings of several thousand dollars
  • Very comfortable ride

Advantages in the Sport:

  • More fun ride
  • Better in inclement weather
  • I like the trim/look better

My use case:

  • 99% city driving, lots of freeways (los angeles area)

Is there anything that I'm not thinking of, here? Any recommendations from you Edge vets?

Thanks!!!

I am having the same issue. Time for me to replace my 11 Ltd AWD. I like what I have and fee like the engine is sufficient for me. I am looking at the Sport because it can be ordered with the Option package that is not requiring the BAMR. I also am hesitant about the turbo engine. I am looking to hear from someone that the Ecoboost can give me 150K miles without having to worry about expensive repair bills. If I were sure that the 2.7 twin turbo has made for the long haul I would not have an issue with getting one. In fact I would look forward to something different as I have already owned 2 Edge's with the 3.5 (both of which were trouble free).

If you drive all highway, 150K should be a piece of cake :)

Seriously though, it all depends what your driving style is. If you are a "normal" driver, using mostly low to medium throttle, some heavy throttle, and follow the maintenance schedule and use the recommended fluids/products for your vehicle and use high quality fuel, should do just fine. Be aware that claims of 100,000 on spark plugs and 150,000 on trans fluid changes are not my favorite items, and the intervals would be halved for optimum performance.

If your driving style is throttle heavy, definitely follow the severe duty schedule, use 93 octane gas, move up to quality full synthetic fluids for the Edge, and expect to pay a bit more due to more frequent "scheduled" maintenance bills. The PTU might be a new design, but in the absence of firm data, expect to be putting the PTU/RDU fluids on the same severeduty schedule as trans fluid, maybe more often.

All IMHO.

Keep an eye on hoses and clamps related to the turbo system. They like to work themselves loose and can be a cause for annoyance on the EB engines.

The 2.7L was designed for duty in the heavier F-150 that can tow much more than its weight! The transmission/PTU in the Edge Sport has long been used with the more powerful 3.5L Ecoboost engine in the heavier Flex Ecoboost since 2010. I wouldn't worry about their durability in the Edge Sport!

My driving style is light to medium. The 3.5 works for me but the BAMR does not. I have had 2 of them and keep them fully closed most of the time. I want the fancy seats, blind spot and other package contents. I just don't think the 2.0 will last long either, that engine is spinning hard all the time. On the negative side, I can't get the cognac seats in the Sport. Lots to think about.

hey guys, this is the exact thread i'm looking for as well. also waivering between titanium and sport on 2016. i also leaning on sport, love the look and engine. i got two questions though.

i am musician so cargo space is great, but if i need to tow, is there a reason you cant get the class II trailer hitch on the more powerful sport? seems weird since its the strongest engine. is it only cause of rear bumper?

2nd, i am huge tech nerd, so is there anything lacking on a fully loaded sport that would be on the titanium? just trying to see if going sport i lose anything tech-wise.

There is no official reason why the Towing packaging is not available on the Sport, even though the same engine/trans & chassis are available with the tow package on the Lincoln MKX. But in any case, the Sport can still tow up to 2000lbs without the tow package, though you'll have to buy/install an aftermarket hitch. Few members on the forum already did it.

I had the 2.0 EB in my Fusion and loved it, but I was so used to it that I wanted to step up to something with some punch. I also loved the no-chrome look of the Sport. The Titanium is a really nice looking vehicle though and I really admire the different interior color options.
