t0lkman
I'm planning to buy Edge 2016 Titanium I have read a lot about the PTU leak and now I'm scared. I really want AWD model because my previous (current) car Subaru Legacy AWD, and I so used to AWD style of driving. Do you think they solved the problem in 2016? Or should I buy just extended warrant so dealer will be taking care of all those kidna leaks during 7 years?
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I don't think the problem is resolved yet. I see the fluid capacities for the PTU/RDU are still the same. I would put them on a 3/36 program for fluid R&R. That should help prolong unit life. That and/or an extended warranty is the way to go, IMO. davidceder
See how things go for the first 3 years. You can always buy the extended warranty just prior to the 3yr/36MO expiration. Ford might fix by then.
cab2g
Quick question, has there been any history of 2015's with high miles showing PTU leaks? Has anyone from Ford confirmed/denied that the power transfer unit in the 2015/2016 model is the same as was in the first generation Edge? If this was a known issue, which it seems to be. I don't see why Ford wouldn't fix it during a major redesign.
redlancer
Pretty sure 2015+ Edge is different drivetrain than the 2007-2014.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I don't think anyone with a 2015 has put on a lot of miles yet, but if so, add it to macbwt's thread for sure! WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I guess the question is still whether this is simply a part number change or an actual design change meriting the part number upgrade. The first versions of the PTU had problems. Then they added cooling & temp monitoring to some of them. Still had problems. So now ... what? Interesting that Tasca lists the AT4Z7251D as still applicable to the 2015 MY: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-TRANSFER-CASE-POWER-TAKE-OFF-4WD-MKS-FLEX-MKT-TAURUS-EDGE-MKX-EXPLORER-/281698803682
cab2g
I was poking around fordparts.com and it looks like the 2016 assembly is different: 2016: http://www.fordparts.com/Commerce/PartDetail.aspx?n=VkSEkUGtkOBGrMgEVs91Ig%3d%3d&id=341439593&m=2&search=true&year=2016&make=Ford&model=Edge 2007-2014 http://www.fordparts.com/Commerce/PartDetail.aspx?n=m2mGzyKu0A5ID%2fU7DMLVRg%3d%3d&id=342858319&m=2&search=true&year=2009&make=Ford&model=Edge The exploded parts diagrams use many of the same part numbers, but the shape of the parts is clearly different. That's enough evidence to me that they redesigned the transfer case for 2015. The transfer cases also appear to differ between engines in 2015, where it was common for the previous generation: 2016: http://www.fordparts.com/Commerce/CatalogResults.aspx?y=2015&m=Ford&mo=Edge&initSearch=1&partNo=7251# 2007-2014: http://www.fordparts.com/Commerce/CatalogResults.aspx?y=2011&m=Ford&mo=Edge&initSearch=1&partNo=7251#Search Edited January 25, 2016 by cab2g
t0lkman
@cab2g So there is hope that they have redesigned the unit and all the leaks are in the past
omar302
Also, the PTU is covered by the powertrain warranty which is good for 5 years or 60k miles.
