jacorob
http://www.autoblog.com/2016/01/04/ford-sync-3-apple-carplay-android-auto/ 2016 edge will receive the update. This was one of my gripes of the edge. Now if they'd just let the sport have the tow package and allow roof rails with the panoramic sunroof... mjonis
Yay! One of the many reasons I am waiting for the 2016 model. Although if the Kia Sorento had the same system as the Optima (which supports Carplay and AA), I'd take it. But I can wait a year and save up some money. tpm419419
It states the 17 will get LTE for remote starting and such ( from phone ). Will the 16's get that update?
luminator
It states the 17 will get LTE for remote starting and such ( from phone ). Will the 16's get that update? You can currently purchase this from the dealer for the 15, so I do not see why you would not be able to for the 16. It is not an update to the system as it would need an antenna installed for the LTE signal.
tpm419419
Yes, but the 17's it will be standard equipment. Like most other car manufacturers. So I was hoping maybe it would be part of the Car Play update that 16's would get. May need to extend my lease 6 months
akirby
I'm sure you'll be able to add the 4G LTE modem. As luminator points out this is already available as a stand alone accessory.
tpm419419
If you read the article the LTE remote looking / unlocking, etc is part of Sync and Car Play. Maybe the Sync 3 already has the modem, antenna http://www.computerworld.com/article/3018918/mobile-wireless/ford-to-support-apple-carplay-and-android-auto-on-sync-3.html
akirby
Actually it says that feature is part of Sync Connect which is separate from apple carplay. I think applink and Carplay and Android Auto will be base sync 3 capabilities while sync connect will be a separate add-on which comes with the 4G LTE modem. cab2g
the biggest catch is that if you buy it as an accessory you pay a couple hundred up front for the modem and then $50/yr for data. It will be free for the first 5 years if you wait until the 2017 model year. But as things go, there will always be some new feature in the next model year. If you keep waiting until the next new thing comes out, you'll never buy it. I've used the onstar system on and off and really, there was one time I needed to unlock my car remotely and I never needed to start it when I was out of the range of the key fob. I suppose if you work in a large corporate office, remote start over the internet may be nice.
tpm419419
If nothing else, confirmation that the vehicle started is a great feature

tpm419419
Sync has always been free for first 3 years. Then I'm told the 15 model year went to 1 year I believe. If what I read is true, they expect the 17 model Edge in July. If that's the case I only need to wait a couple of months because my lease is up in June. Works out! I think you're talking about sync services. We're talking about sync connect that uses a dedicated 4G LTE cell modem. The cost is for the cellular data plan. TANSTAAFL! Well I can't imagine MSRP going up $500 unless they make some other changes. It's better than what GM gives. You only get 6 months of free onstar then the cheapest plan is $10/mo.... I'll take free for 5 years and <$5/mo any day over GM's deal. That's even if they increased MSRP by $500.

akirby
Oh it's a good deal I just get a little perturbed when people say things are free when they really aren't.
akirby
Meaning - somebody is paying AT&T for that data plan and modem whether it's the customer directly or Ford indirectly.
tpm419419
Akirby Very possible Ford gets the data for next to nothing. The customer than becomes the paying customer once the " free " term is up. Good for Ford and good for whoever provides the data
akirby
I'm sure they get a discount but they're not getting 5 years of data for next to nothing. Maybe if it was 12 months.
tpm419419
I guess we'll need to compare MSRP once the 17's roll out
akirby
I guess we'll need to compare MSRP once the 17's roll out The price of the stand alone sync connect option (modem plus data plan) is the best indicator. Doesn't matter anyway - you don't really have a choice.
