At 2000 miles the right front developed a bubble about an inch in diameter about half way between the hub and the rim on one spoke. No sign of damage inflicted to the wheel. Dealer is ordering a replacement under warranty. Ironically I read that one reason Ford went to the chrome claddng was the high warranty claims from pitting on "real" chrome wheels. Anyone else encountered this issue? Hopefully its contamination on the plastic before plating or some other fluke that wont be common. sengland Posted February 11, 2008 Report Share Posted February 11, 2008 I have seen the Bubbling on several Fords with these Chrome Clad wheels, mine has not done it yet but I am expecting it to do so. What I have noticed is the Etching of the rim due to trapped contaminants between the Chrome Cover and the wheel lip. Very bad design on these wheels in my opinion, very bad. m825smoke Posted March 24, 2008 Report Share Posted March 24, 2008 my wife has a 07, it got about 8k on it, were having the same problem with the cheap rims on the car!! i've tried everything to try and get them off, but to no avail! They just seem to be getting worst, the same is happening to the chrome grill! the car is awesome, i've been fortunate having no problems at all, yet! but my wife love this car, but the rims and tires suck!! if any one has any suggestion, i'm open for answers!!!! The grill is different because it isn't a cover like on the wheels. I have heard of this before. Hopefully they change the design. I have 25k on my '07 SEL Plus with no problem yet. I am not sure why they went this direction, but I am sure weight was one of them. Chrome steel wheels would be heavier than Aluminum w/ Chrome Cover. More weight in wheels = lower MPG. I was told this morning that Ford has a new part number for the 18" chrome clad rims and they would replace my peeling rims with this new part number. I am going to hold off until this spring (that is if Ford can hold on that long) so the winter salt and road grime stays off the new rims for a couple months. Ford replaced my Chrome Clad 18's, for the black pitting under the clear coat, on the outer edge of the wheel in the Spring of 08. I work at a Ford Dealer and they would only replace them with what came on the car when it was new. Well here I am again, 1 year and 3 months old, 13,500 miles, and the replacement wheels are doing the same thing as the original ones did. :wacko: They need replaced again, this is getting REAL OLD Is there a better replacement, or a new part number for better wheels? Maybe a little earlier. I was just in the dealership the other day and the parts guy flagged me down and said he had a new set and a old warranted set. So I went into the back and looked them both over. You couldn't tell a difference between the 2 rims, besides the clear coat coming off of one. I am waiting until April or so when the snow and salty roads leave, then I will be getting my new rims. Atleast then they will look good for one year. I am trying to buy or have Ford give me my old rims. I figured then I could have a winter and summer set. But haven't got very far. IZZYAZ Posted January 27, 2009 Report Share Posted January 27, 2009 I haven't seen a picture on line yet, but the 18" rims are an aluminum rim with basically a chromed plastic hub cap attached to it. Where the chrome plastic meets the aluminum rim the clear coat on the rim starts to pit, dis-color, and flake off. So basically the lip between the tire and the chrome plastic goes from a nice aluminum look to having black spots and flaking clear coat. My wife who drives the Edge everyday, but never washes it, never noticed this. But she can notice when I have flipped thru her Victoria Secret catalogue? So weird!!! ACLazer Posted January 27, 2009 Report Share Posted January 27, 2009 There is actually a "Core Charge" on the old wheels. I was going to do the same thing, and was going to buy another set of tires, mount them on the old corroded wheels, and run them in the Winter months here in Ohio. Once I found out how high the Core Charge was to purchase the old wheels, I gave up on that idea. I do have some pictures of the corrosion on the first set of wheels and the second set too, at home on my Desk Top. I will put them up very soon, so you can see what were talking about. The corrosion is on the very outer lip, right where the bead of the tire seals on the rim. It looks like it's getting under the clear coat that protects the aluminum and just spreads and get's worse. The Plastic Chrome Cladding on the middle is hard to keep clean, with brake dust, road grime and winter crud, but that part does survive with a good cleaning and waxing. I did go online with FMC Dealer and I checked for any Updates, TSB's or Bulletins and I didn't find anything on it. Thanks Dom Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Blue Oval Posted February 2, 2009 Report Share Posted February 2, 2009 Now that I have had a chance to wash the car myself @ home, I too have seen the black pitting. First it started on only one rear wheel , but now they have spread like cancer pitting all 4! Are each of you owners that have the etching live in areas where road salt is used? Seems like mine started right into winter. Will be calling the dealer today to document this, so in case they don't get replaced, I won't get hit with penalty @ lease end. ACLazer Posted February 25, 2009 Report Share Posted February 25, 2009 (edited) Here's the scoop on the 18" Chrome Clad Wheels. Ford has changed the supplier of the Edge Chrome Clad Wheels. I pulled a sticker off the new replacement wheels, in the Parts Dept here at work, and did some Internet Research. I did find out some good stuff too. Since July/August of 2008 Lacks Enterprises Inc. in Michigan is NOW the supplier to Ford for the Edge Chrome Clad Wheels. I spoke to a real nice guy there this morning, (no names) and found out all the details. I don't want to give out names and phone numbers, and stuff like that, but I can tell you this. They have done extensive testing in hot, cold, high corrosion areas and just about everywhere else too, and they have seen no problems with the new wheels. The new supplier of the new wheels will have a sticker on them that say "Lacks Chromtec" with a part number and date of #150-00180-08/22/2008. There is also a Ford TSB dated 08/2008 that says if there is corrosion problem, to replace them with current Ford Factory Parts. They really don't get into any details in the TSB though.
