freekyFX4
Anyone else hate the fact that Ford cheaped out and didn't put gas struts under the hood to hold it up? I could not believe it when I saw that metal pole under there to prop up the hood. Anyone thinking about doing this? 07-08 Ford Edge / MKX Hood Lift PLUS Gas Strut Shock
PROTUS
Yeah, man....it's real hard to lift that little metal rod and insert it in the hole....Gawd, they expect me to open the doors with my own hands, too....what the hell were they thinking???? solas989
I actually prefer them without the gas struts - just another thing to replace when it goes bad - which it will. Plus, not every car has them and is not a sign of cheaping out - imo. Solas
Lex Talionis
rig 'em up yourself.. buy struts like this at any parts store would be kind of cool Edited February 5, 2008 by Lex Talionis
pickupf150
No gas struts means less weight and more room in the engine compartment. Even a small amount of weight changes the mpg and HP.
freekyFX4
It's just odd, that's all. Every car or truck I have owned in the past 10 years has had gas struts that assist with lifting and hold up the hood. The last car I had that didn't have them was a Ford Escort. My BMW had them. My F250 has them. My Explorer has them. I expected a $37,000 Edge to have them. As for weight causing lower gas mileage, maybe somebody can explain the fact that my 2003 4WD Explorer with a 4.6L V8 gets better gas mileage than our new AWD Edge. I am fairly sure that at about 5,000 lbs, it is heavier than my Edge. The explorer averages 16.5 MPG in the city.
freekyFX4
Come to think of it, the last car I had that didn't have them was a 1996 Ford Cobra.

Plus it's winter and the winter fuels suck. Should be a lot better in a few months.

Should be a lot better in a few months. I agree...but the Explorer is currently using winter fuel as well. In the summer time, with summer blends, it still gets about the same because the AC pulls the fuel mileage down a bit. I assume that this is true for the Edge as well. freekyFX4
Off topic, but what oil are you using in your Edge akirby?
akirby
Off topic, but what oil are you using in your Edge akirby? Nothing, since I haven't bought one yet. But I use motorcraft 5W-20 in my Fusion and Aviator and that's what I'll use in the Edge/MKX. We'll probably be buying later this year. The factory 5W-20 is a synthetic blend and I haven't seen a compelling reason to switch to anything else.
gluman
I bought and installed the $79 kit off ebay, great directions, easy install (about 30mins) and I no longer have that stupid bar in the middle. All cars should have these struts. This is where the US automakers lose out to the Germans, check out the cheapest VW.
