darienfalks
Hello, My mkX has a rattle in the liftgate area when I hit bigger bumps. The noise used to be a lot more consistant until I took some white grease to my door latchs on all 5 doors, rear seat brackets, and every rubber stopper. Helped a lot, but I still hear that rattle in my liftgate that makes my Lincoln sound super cheaper then it already is haha. Anyways, before I try to remove the liftgate trim has anyone else had this problem? I had a friend drive the car as I sat in the back and the noise IS coming from inside the liftgate. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
If lubing the various componentry didn't fix it, then probably time to take the panel off and look at all the fasteners real closely. A screw could literally have come loose over time, or a plug could have broken off, etc.
enigma-2
What kind of sound is it? Like a wiper motor with loose mounting, or like a poorly connected wiper arm, or more like the lock mechanism not holding the hatch closed tightly enough due to worn rubber bushings? darienfalks
Sounds like metal hitting plastic. I dont yet know how to remove the panel on the hatch. Theres 4 screws holding the bottom part on and thats it. looks like you may have to snap the rest out of its place which usually meants breaking something you dont want to. I dont see anyscrews or anything missing, but when the hatch is open I can smack it with my hand and kinda hear the noise. Sounds different when its open. enigma-2
Did you check the side bumpers for wear and alignment? The latch to see if it was latching closed tightly enough? If it still seems to be coming from the interior of the liftgate, you will need to pull the cover. Here's the procedure from the service manual: Remove the liftgate lower trim panel. 1. Remove the 4 liftgate lower trim panel screws. 2. Pull outward on the liftgate lower trim panel to release the liftgate lower trim panel retainers. 3. Remove the liftgate upper trim panel. 4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. NOTE: The back of the liftgate trim panel is shown indicating the location of the liftgate trim panel retainers.
Brucifer
Are you using four bolts to secure the license plate to the liftgate? Have you wiggled different parts of the liftgate to see if they move (including the tail lights)?

I will get it removed and make sure everythings tight. I may also check under the car and make sure the exhuast and bumper mounts are tight. @Bruceifer. First thing I checked was the plate and it only had the top bolts. Bought a plate hardware kit at walley world, but nothing changed..I will also check the taillights and just about anything else I can think of. I really hate interior ratlles haha. macbwt
Lift the rear cargo lid make sure the plastic or foam inserts are in securely and the spare tire removed and reinserted and tightened. Things should quiet down a bit for you.
darienfalks
Sorry for the late reply. I finally removed the trim panel and everythings tight except the lift gate itself lol. With the panel off I was able to get a grip on the gate. I can rock it it back and forth and here the noise. My latch isn't tight, not sure how to adjust without screwing it up just yet
darienfalks
Also, my PTU is leaking. After researchING this issue I may consider getting rid of this American pos and going back to German cars. Can't believe ford won't acknowledged the problem, but hey Volkswagen in a ton of trouble too so I guess they all suck
akirby
They acknowledged it by issuing TSBs, updated parts and repair kits. If you mean they should cover it under warranty - your vehicle is 8 years old. How many mfrs (German or otherwise) would provide warranty coverage on a 8 yr old car unless forced to do so by a government recall?
darienfalks
I agree with ya, I guess what I was trying to say is it should be a recall if they all fail this early. Mazda was helping customers with the same issue and part on the cx-
darienfalks
I did a temp fix for my rattle. I wrapped two layers of duct tape around the door latch bar to make it thicker and the noise went away. Looks like my motorized latch isnt grabbing the little bar tight enough. May have to adjust or replace.
enigma-2
Wonder if the side bumpers are worn, allowing a looser fit of the hatch in its opening?
