TJay
In my 2008 MKX (3.5L) AWD Im getting a metal on metal sound tick at idle. It just started last night and got drastically worse as the engine warmed up, on a cold start this morning it was barely noticeable in Park or Neutral but once in gear it got loud again. The ticks increase as RPMs increase and it seems to be coming from almost dead center under the front end of the car but I cant seem to narrow it down from there. Before I got into spending tonight troubleshooting I figured Id see here if there was a common cause of this type of issue that the Edge experts know about. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Based on the location of the sound, you are probably looking at a PTU-Driveshaft issue. In Park/Neutral, I believe the driveshaft is disengaged. Any fluid leaks from that area? What's possibly needed: PTU fluid R&R PTU unit R&R Driveshaft bearings R&R Driveshaft R&R I'm leaning more towards a driveshaft issue though. TJay
I didnt have much time to look over everything as of yet, the vehicle has never left a spot in the garage but there is a damp location just off center towards the drivers side. I assumed it was related but I didn't want to just jump to conclusions when it could be something completely different. My wife uses this car daily so normally I would just keep the car on my day off and diagnose the issue but I work late all week and we are leaving on a couple hour drive Saturday morning so I have very limited time with it. Thank you for giving me some starting points though, Im going to try and get it up in the air tonight and check everything out more thoroughly
TJay
here is the sound I'm referring to and where it appears to be coming from now that I'm home to look at it. https://youtu.be/-i4zCmV8Khw
autom8r
TJay: Check your oil. How many miles are on the engine? It sounds like a rod knock or piston slap (wrist pin). Good luck.
macbwt
That deserves a diagnostic at the mechanic or dealer. Best of luck.
TJay
That deserves a diagnostic at the mechanic or dealer. Best of luck. I was already thinking that, as much as I dread taking it in for any service. TJay: Check your oil. How many miles are on the engine? It sounds like a rod knock or piston slap (wrist pin). Good luck. That was my first thought when I heard it but upon closer inspection I'm almost certain it's not. Following the noise iwth a stehoscope it lead me right down to where I shot the video. Although Ive had some long days at work and even longer nights in the garage so I could be completely wrong
TJay
Well I dropped it off at the shop the other day and found out the flywheel is cracked... I knew the sound was coming from that location but that thought didn't even cross my mind so if anybody ever has a similar noise and comes across this thread keep that in mind Also they checked the gas tank for signs of corrosion due to a recall on this model year and found enough damage to replace my gas tank so in the end its a positive that I brought it in and wasnt able to diagnose the noise myself. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Cracked flywheel! Gotta be a first, I guess. They have a new tank in stock?
TJay
They said they had to order it, but it would be in before the fly wheel would anyway since apparently no warehouse anywhere near WI has a flywheel in stock. Either way it should be done by the end of the week, or so they say
