Vadimus
Any radio guys over here? I took my HAM antenna from my Outlander, which has all aluminium roof so the only stickable place was a narrow strip of the liftgate, hoping to stick it to my Edge somewhere next to B pillar. To my surprise the only magnetic piece is the narrow, 1.5" or so rounded part at the edge. Does anybody have radio antenna mounted on his 2015 Edge? TheWizard
We found the same problem with our Sorento. We only use the amateur radio during events so a mag mount is the most convenient otherwise I would just go ahead and drill a hole for an NMO mount. The solution I came up with for occasional use was a flat piece of metal and four 3" industrial suction cups ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FE01JE2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00). I drilled holes in the corners of the metal plate and mounted the studs of the suction cups through the holes. Then when we need the mobile radio, I just stick the plate to the glass roof with the suction cups and plunk the mag mount antenna onto the plate. It has held without issue at 70+ mph for both days of a weekend event so I have no concerns of it flying off. 73s Edited September 25, 2015 by TheWizard
Vadimus
I thought of something like that yet I want my antenna to be mounted most of the time (maybe taking it off for auto car wash). Maybe I'll go with something like this:
punch-card
Please post your results, as I will need some suggestions later this year (early next) when I get a 2016. 73's Mike
Vadimus
later this year (early next) when I get a 2016. Thanks for not mentioning "2016 with Sync 3, adaptive steering and adaptive cruise control" If someone's looking for me tell them I went crying... punch-card
Sure I will mention any of those 3 items Good luck with through the glass, I had one 10+ years ago for 2 and 440, the coverage was not as good as I liked (directional lobe), but truthfully with all the repeaters now-a-days, I'm not sure it would make a difference unless you are trying to run 50w rig or are a long way from the repeater. I am not sure about the suction cup concept, I figure if the antenna was design to be "drill a hole" type, it needs more ground plane larger than a 1-2 ft square of metal....But the wizard did say it was just a temporary mount, but modern vehicles have less and less sheet metal so it is hard... To each his own... Edited September 25, 2015 by punch-card
Vadimus
Repeaters plus less than mile range when travelling with several cars together - that's it for my usage scenarios. And my Baofeng's 5W radio isn't a microwave gun for sure
