Seats giving me a back problem

Recommended Posts

Just bought a new titanium Edge. 3 days old. My question is seats. Anyone besides me finding they give you a back problem? Perfect on the test drive, but 30 minutes in I'm constantly adjusting the seat. Only happened to me with one other car during my entire lifetime. Yea, I know how to properly adjust the seat and lumber, even did a google search, but for some reason it seems put be putting a strain on my back.

Please chime in for fixes not exercise routines as I am fit. I love this car and know this can be worked out.

Hallelujah !! I found someone with the same problem, I have! I bought my 2015 Edge Sport fully charged at the end of April. Since then, I always try to adjust my seat ... After 10 minutes in the driver's seat, I feel the pressure in my lower (sciatic nerve) pain in the back and left leg. I discovered that my office is (bottom) are too soft in my ass. It's like my ass too sank into the seat causing me pain in the back. For two weeks I'm sitting on a towel to "strengthen your" seat base ... This greatly improved my problem.

In addition, the footrest is too thick. By adjusting the seat to my driving position, when I put my left foot on the footrest, my left knee is higher than my right knee (the throttle / brake). This misaligned pelvis and causes numbness in the thigh and back.

I opened a complaint file with Ford Canada there is 1 month. Still no news ...

I sat in another brand new 2015 Edge Sport and I found the same problem partially. The seat is new so it is perhaps not softened just like mine ...

I just ordered a 2015 Edge almost identical to yours. My wife and I are retired and drive from Canada to Texas each winter. Uncomfortable seats will be a major issue for us.

We have our 2015 Titanium edge on order. (He have owned a 2007 and currently drive a 2013). The order is on ‘material hold’ as we are waiting on the Adaptive Cruise.

Our first test drive of the 2015 Edge was in an SEL with leather. Very uncomfortable seats. (Ribbed look.) We were not going to purchase a new Edge because of those seats.

I researched the seats and found that the Edge has 6 different seats available. (One cloth and 5 leather.)

The SEL we drove had what I call the ‘ribbed’ version of the leather seats. The Titanium has the ‘smooth’ version and it is available in perforated and non-perforated versions. The perforated seats are the heated AND cooled. The sport also has same versions as the titanium but has a suede insert. To me the insert feels like you stick to it and is not comfortable.

They all are somewhat uncomfortable. The ‘ribbed’ version I could not stand at all. The Titanium non-perforated seats are acceptable. The best seat, in my opinion, is the Titanium perforated seats. The perforation seems to add a bit of softness and flexibility. Though it’s not a great seat, I can live with it. (I hope.) Otherwise we will be getting a Nissan Murano with their zero-gravity seats. I hope Ford will address these issues for Job 2.

PS I am 5’7 and about 190lb.

Seat comfort are such an individual thing. For those that find them uncomfortable - what was your previous vehicle?

Pontiac Grand-am GT 2000, Nissan Sentra SE-R 2003, Mazda 3 GT 2006, Mazdaspeed 3 2008 and 2012...then, Edge Sport 2015.

No one else had inconfortable seat like the Edge.

PS: Yes, you easily stick on suede insert...

let's see, over the last 42 years I've had Honda's, Lexus, Mercedes, Volvo, Datsun, Nissan, Chevrolet, Vettes, Acuras, Cadillac, Lincolns, Saturns, and many Rentals. Currently just traded a 2011 Ford Ranger, have a Prius and a Mercedes 280 SLK. Not one of these bothers my back.

Yes seat are a personal thing, but how did all these other companies get it so right for me? I am short and am noticing the issue I may be having is I'm getting more support down low (lumber) and nothing from just under shoulder blades up. In fact my upper back isn't even touching the seat.

I think I'm going to play around with folding a towel and placing behind my upper back, not lower. Either way I'm' going back to a Ford dealer and ask them to fix it as count 1 against Lemon law. I don't want to give up the car, love it, but I'm sure with a good upholstery shop this can be remedied.

My local dealer gave me a Focus to drive (seat was fine) but it shifted horrible. I asked about it and he said designed that way. I asked if people accept that answer and he said no, they've been taking lots of them back under Lemon law.

LOL @ uncomfortable seat complaint as 1 count against lemon law.

Come on man. Comparability of seat is purely a personal thing.

I too have driven many brands. I didn't like the seats in my GFs car, yet she found it comfortable, and a lot of other people found them comfortable.

Maybe I'll try to get a strike toward the lemon law because I don't like the button placement on my radio.

What is the problem with the heated/cooled feature of the seats? The one we test drove got very warm for heated and really really cold for cooling.. I had to turn down the cooling it was so cold. (June)

People are reporting the back gets too warm when the cooling is turned on. Same issue the F150 has.

Seat design is no different than the Focus transmission shift issue. They designed it that way, can't change how it shifts, but still have to take them back. At least the seat is repairable. Yes it may be subjective to a point, but they are getting complaints and it is repairable which is what the lemon law is for.

Ford Ranger fit me fine, F150, Focus, and the Fusion. Even the Explorer is better. You don't think it is strange that only the Edge gives me and others a problem? At $40k you don't think it should be as good as a Focus???

I find the seats incredibly comfortable.....but Im 6'0 and 300lbs(Im a power lifter and world strong man lifter.......so Im very heavy in my quads....smaller in the waist and heavy in chest and torso)...in fact Ive driven for over 9 hours strait(only stopping for gas) and It was a great experience.....my wife on the other hand, hates the head rest.....she finds it pushes her head to far forward and makes her slouch in the seat.....she is 5'4" and weighs 122lbs

You know you can adjust the tilt on the headrests right?

Yes...but the tilt is at its 1st setting.....it seems she sits really low in the seat and has a very small/thin torso......so it looks like the head rest has to move back more.....tilting it and or raising it only makes it worse for her.

You know this post makes me think this is part of the problem with the seat. I too am small, like you wife. I see others posting it's OK, but they are larger people and fit way over the lumbar support and are able to compress the foam better.

I think the fit issue may be affecting shorter/smaller people more. I think the amount of cushioning in the lower area prevents smaller people from getting their back to comfortably reach the top of the backrest. If this is true, fairly easy fix.

All I can say is I can't get in the car more than 20 minutes without the pain starting, and I do mean pain. When I get out I hurt the rest of the day and I'm not happy about taking Aleve just to drive a car. I drive 25k miles a year and sometimes 9 hour clips, so I need to have it fixed without giving up the car.

Does the seat go up and down independent of the back? If so you could try raising the seat. Could also get an upholsterer to modify the seat once you know what needs to change.

Yep, seat move independently (under the ass) up and down from the front vs rear. The problem for me is the softness of the back part of the seat (the part near of the backrest). That part are too soft vs the part under the legs.
