High pitch whining noise

this has been going on for some time now. Started out of nowhere. 2013 Edge SEL AWD, with 49,000 miles, 3.5 L engine. The high pitch engine noisecan be heard at low speed, 40-50 mph. Very loud, like a plane taking off, at higher speed, 70-80 mph. It is constant no matter whether I push the gas or not. But it is louder when foot is off the gas. Here is link to the sound:

Please let me know if you know what might be wrong. Car drives great. No vibration or anything. Used to be a very quiet ride. But this noise is annoying! Maintenance on schedule every time. Thanks!

Hey zackp,

Have you been to your local Ford Dealer for this concern? I recommend making an appointment here. In addition, PM your full name, phone number, VIN, and the dealer's name; I'll get you connected with your regional customer service manager, who'll work with you and the service advisors to come to a solution.

Thanks,

Todd

Hi All,

thank you very much for your replies! It is indeed a PTU failure. Went to a local dealer, told him to check PTU. Found the same problem many people had, leaking fluid. I started to have a wired smell back in May. Told the dealer during oil change the smell problem. He said everything was fine. I should turn AC to internal so i don't get any smell. Last week it came to a point that the dealer (a different one) told me it got really close to break down on the road. He gave me a loaner car to drive for 4 days including a weekend. Now noise gone.

To Todd,

Just wondering why not issuing a recall since so many known problems with PTU. It is really embarrassing to drive a 2013 nice looking car with that noise. It made a very bad brand image for Ford. Friends will laugh to know a car with 40k making that kind of noise. It is also dangerous. Dealer told me gears could fly out of the PTU if on the highway.

In addition to PTU, I had another problem with this car. A wired rattling noise from B pillar. exactly the same with this post http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/17808-ive-got-a-rattle/. It is the rear pushpin for that plastic cover underneath. I went to a dealer 3 times and checked both doors on drivers' side. could not solve the problem. Went to another dealer to have a 2nd eye. Still could not find where it came from. Could you please, after seeing this post, issue a TSB at least, to notify your dealers of this known problem? This is really another embarrassing noise, kill the brand image instantly, make the car feel so cheap, even though it is a AWD SEL model.

I took so much time from my work to get the car fixed. Got so confused every time they told me they could not find the problem. I had to leave with it. It is a 13 model with less than 50k miles. This is my first time buying a Ford. Not a pleasant experience. Had high expectations.

Thanks for the update, zackp.

I'm back from my vacation, and glad to learn that the dealer resolved your concern! Issuing a TSB is outside of my scope but this is where our certified technicians come into play. The engineering department complies information from our techs which helps them identity any symptoms that become trending concerns. At that time, they work to create solutions to provide the dealers. Let me document your product feedback. Please PM your full name, VIN, mileage, dealer, and best daytime phone number. I'll make sure it's noted! :)
