bravesgal4life
My air started blowing hot a couple of weeks ago. It has done this before (3 years ago), but it just needed more freon. My dad put in some freon, or we think he knew what he was doing. It blew cold air for a day, and then was hot again. I took it to a friend to check it out, and he determined it needed a new air compressor b/c of the reading from the machine he hooked up to it. Not wanting to take on that expense, I took it to another guy for a second opinion. He said there are no signs that my compressor is bad, but it sounds like a leak. After they got under the hood, they realized there was several years of gunk on the "screen" as he called it and they cleaned that out. He put freon in, and ran dye to see if there was a leak. He couldn't find anything else wrong with it. When I picked it up, he said he isn't sure what he did fixed the problem and that I might be back in a few days. Turns out that the air does get cold now, but it comes in phases. It will usually start off cold then gradually blows hot, and then gradually blows cold again. It's constant phases like that. Anyone else heard of these problems? Any idea what is causing this?
thirdgenlxi
Is your cooling fan working??
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I assume the low side/high side pressures were checked each time work was done on the A/C system? Sounds like the condenser was cleaned (the part in front of the radiator)? Also check if your cabin air filter is blocked. Does water drip from underneath the Edge when you run the A/C? How many miles do you have on your Edge? As Jared pointed out, the fans have been known to fail. Usually a replacement from Dorman works pretty well in these cases. May need to make sure the electrical connections are tight on the new units tho. Do you have the "standard" Edge or the one with the towing package installed? bravesgal4life
REPLIES FOR BOTH POSTS: Not sure if the cooling fan is working. The air filter isn't blocked. Yes, water drips underneath when the A/C is used. There's around 135,000 miles on it and 90% of them are highway miles (if that matters). It is a "standard" Edge. macbwt
If the fans do not kick on but the A/C compressor is cycling then it is the fans. You should be able to get a diagnostic for under $100.00 on the A/C to determine the problem then change out the fans your self if this is the issue.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I think the fan for the A/C is on the driver side of the fan assembly. You won't feel a breeze there if you start up the Edge with the A/C off. But should when you turn on the MAX A/C. At least that was my experience. Even with a strong light, it was kinda hard to see the fans turning. Maybe a sizeable makeup mirror would work?
