Oil Change?

We will be taking delivery of my wife's 2015 AWD edge sport on Saturday. I have not had a chance to read the manual yet and have never owned a turbo vehicle. I was wondering if anyone has any input on oil changes for the 2.7 ecoboost as far as brand, type(synthetic, semi synthetic, non synthetic), intervals? Thanks!

For normal driving, the manual suggest waiting for the 'Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor' to warn you, but expect the message to pop up between 7500-10000 miles.

Recommended motor oil (U.S.): WSS-M2C946-A
Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
XO-5W30-QSP

Our warning just went off 3% and we're just under 5,000 miles. Ours appears to be triggered by mileage more than anything...

It seems to be keyed to you actual driving style. Heres Ford's description of how it determines when to trigger:

Thank you for the link. I thought it was rather odd that pretty much right at 5,000 miles the warning went off. The majority of the trips are on the shorter side, 10-15 min one direction with a couple of longer ones scattered in infrequently and then an odd (3 times a year) 250 mile trip. From the video I would guess the shorter trips apply more here than anything. Thank you again.

I too am old school and will change with true full synthetic. Mobile One or Castrol Edge (guess which one I used :-)

One reason is to change often is to help minimize the oil fouling on the valve train...not sure how real of a problem it is, but clean synthetic oil is supposed to help.

As soon as I had put 5K miles on my 2015 Sport, I drained and refilled it with Mobil-1 5w-30 Fully-Synthetic motor oil (which is approved by Ford), and have been changing it (along with the filter cartridge) every 3,000 miles after that!

Call me "old school", because I still change my oil every 3K miles... but when it already comes out dark and dirty at 3K... why would I want to leave it in there for a longer period of time?

I'd rather this car ran on much cleaner oil all the time, then much dirtier oil!

I am switching to Mobil One full synthetic @ my next change, now that I've gone over 10k miles. I'm going away from the Motorcraft blended oil. I've used Mobil 1 oil in my vehicles almost exclusively for the last 20 years, IMO the best engine oil. The problem is that I doubt I can get the dealership to put it in, so I may have to do it myself. Has anyone had success getting their dealership to use something other than Motorcraft oil if requested, or even provided for them to put in?

My local dealership uses oil I supply, Mobil-1, when doing "The Works" for $39 and deduct a small amount for the oil that they would have supplied.

Congratulations. You just went to all of this trouble to test the same oil in different bottles. Conoco-Phillips makes both Motorcraft and Kendall motor oils.

Honestly, just use Mobil 1. Better oil, available at Wal-Mart for $23/jug, $12/jug rebates twice a year.

You keep using Mobil-1, but you could be a little more courteous to other forum members.

The Kendall has specific additive which is lacking in the Motorcraft.

Titanium oxide nanoparticles as additives in engine oil

This research study investigates the tribological behaviour of titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles as additives in mineral based multi-grade engine oil. All tests were performed under variable load and varying concentrations of nanoparticles in lubricating oil. The friction and wear experiments were performed using pin-on-disc tribotester. This study shows that mixing of TiO2 nanoparticles in engine oil significantly reduces the friction and wear rate and hence improves the lubricating properties of engine oil. The dispersion analysis of TiO2 nanoparticles in lubricating oil using UV spectrometer confirms that TiO2 nanoparticles possess good stability and solubility in the lubricant and improve the lubricating properties of the engine oil.
