cmillz1331
I recently noticed that there is a loud rattle when I press the gas pedal (while in park or moving) and it sounds like it is coming from the exhaust piping in the middle (at connection of front and back doors) of the car, underneath. I had my buddy take a look under there and nothing seems to be visibly shaking but it's loud enough to hear while driving with the radio on....almost sounds like I'm driving a freaking go-cart around town. Just wondering if anyone has encountered the same thing or may have some insight....taking it to a local muffler place that my buddy has gone to a lot with his old car, but I don't want to get ripped off since I don't know exactly what's wrong. Anything will help, thanks.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
My guess would be a loose heat shield. Edge has been quiet (knock on wood), but have had it on other Fords. A broken exhaust clamp can cause that also, but less likely. Sound travels. If the sound is indeed originating between front /back doors, it could be a driveshaft support bearing. Any objects recently hit the underneath of the Edge? Any loss in power or other issues? Edited April 16, 2015 by WWWPerfA_ZN0W
cmillz1331
No, nothing hit underneath in a long time. Just driving on crappy roads in Cleveland, Ohio....is anything you mentioned very expensive to fix? I've never really had any big problems other than routine stuff
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
The driveshaft support bearing could be, not sure re: cost. The exhaust shield may just require some repositioning/tightening. It may require some bending back into shape if it has deformed. Pretty easy/quick to do if the vehicle is on a lift. http://autorepair.about.com/od/fixityourself/ss/heat_shield_2.htm#step-heading DIY: Repairing an Exhaust Heat Shield Rattle I didn't see a pic in the FSM where the heat shields are on the Edge, otherwise I'd post Edited April 16, 2015 by WWWPerfA_ZN0W
cmillz1331
Awesome man thanks. I'll update after this weekend, hopefully with an answer and fix.
cmillz1331
Update: So shockingly the noise went away right before I took it in. Decided to still drop it off anyways to get it checked out just in case...they checked heat shield, whole exhaust system for leaks, etc. Nothing. Haven't heard the noise since or had any problems so hopefully it was just a freak thing. Plus the shop didn't charge me for looking at it for about 30 min so all is well. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Debris that got stuck and then fell out? Here's to hoping that's a done deal
cmillz1331
That's what they hinted at...I couldn't see when I got on the ground and looked underneath the car. They said something could have just gotten stuck and the wind was blowing against it as I was driving. My thought is that it can't be all that serious if the issue has gone away for over 4 days and for over a couple hundred miles of driving on the highway but we'll see...Thanks for the help. cmillz1331
Well the problem is back....not so much a rattle now but a weird growl instead. It even makes the noise when I start the car so I have no idea what's going on...the noise seems to be associated with the revs of the engine. I'm having it looked at next Friday by a family mechanic...car will be in body shop this week getting a new front bumper. I will update once I know what's going on. macbwt
This video might or might not be the answer. Or does your noise sound somewhat the same? Watch the video.
cmillz1331
No mine's not quite that bad and it's not the same sound...I'm leaning strongly towards a vacuum leak. It sounds like a air leak when stepping on the gas. Almost like I have a diesel engine haha but we'll see...It seems pretty common with the F-150s and they came up with vacuum leak also so I'm hoping it's just that and nothing too serious... WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Does it sound like this Last oil change? Thinking tensioner or cam phaser at worst. Have the mechanic check oil pressure, exhaust leaks also. Hope it is indeed just a vacuum leak. Edited June 1, 2015 by WWWPerfA_ZN0W
cmillz1331
That's more similar to it than previous video but mine is not all the time...mostly just when I start the car after it sits for a few hours and when I hit the gas. It's worse in colder weather as well. Just got an oil change less than a month ago so that's all good and oil pressure seems to be ok via the dash so I'm going to have the mechanic look everything over. He's pretty good at finding the problem so hopefully it will be a quick fix. Thanks for the info.
cmillz1331
UPDATE: So the mechanic found that it is a loose/broken baffle in the exhaust system. So definitely happy it has nothing to do with the engine....unfortunately, the mechanic doesn't do exhaust work so I have a exhaust shop that can do the work next weekend (I need the car all week). At least I get to enjoy my brand new bumper and painted grille!
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Some progress, at least! Where are these baffles located? In the mufflers?
cmillz1331
It's my understanding that they are in the muffler....I'm not an exhaust expert or anything...I just looked it up (never even heard of it before).
cmillz1331
UPDATE: Problem was fixed over a month ago. Ended up not being a broken baffle but a loose piece of metal piping in the exhaust system before reaching muffler ( about under center of car like I originally said). Local shop fixed it good for about $50, not bad to have a normal sounding car again and no problems since. Sorry for the late update but I've been very busy with work and school. Hope no one else has a similar problem because places find it hard to pin point problem. Thanks for everyone's help.
REN
I've got a 2011 MKX with 60000kms that just recently purchased. The next day I got a "Shift To Par" error when the car was actually in park, so I brought it in for service and thats when the rattling/ buzzing noise happened began. It happens at speeds of 60-80km per hour. It sounds like its coming from behind the centre front compartment (where the SD cards in USB connectors are). I completely removed the console and placed foam everywhere I could think the noise could be coming from, but I haven't had any luck fixing the problem Has anyone experience something similar? Please Help! Its driving me crazy!!!
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
So the shifter was replaced? Maybe they left something loose in the process?
macbwt
Check the transmission torque mount located under the trans/engine and attached to the frame. The rubber bushing may be broken or worn and will cause excessive vibration. Also check the left and right mounts on each side inside the engine compartment.
