Time for some new LED headlights! Any thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been eying this new 45W 6000K LED headlight by V-LEDs:

I have read other posts in the forum about this new kit, but I didn't really find that much info out there so I thought new thread = more visitors & more discussions (hopefully).

I have a 2013 Canadian Edge Sport model, wondering whether this new 9006 kit is all 100% plug & play? Im not that expert when it comes to modifying or changing headlights, and there isn't that much information out there about this new kit and how it performs on our Edges, so im kinda afraid of taking the first hit.

Im also not sure which one to get, 3000 or 4500 lumens? I don't want it to be too bright, but I also don't want it to be less brighter than my current HIDs. I couldn't find any comparisions to decide which one suits me better. I also saw this pic on their website saying it's not compatible with headlights that comes with dust covers:

Does my Edge come with that dust cover? I seem to recall seeing something like rubber dust covers so im not sure how this is going to work. Like I said before, I want a 100% plug & play kit, no trimming or anything like that otherwise i'll just stick with my current HIDs. Im also not comfortable with having fans to cool my bulbs as I will have to check on them every once in while to make sure they are running solid and not covered in dust or any other particles that might prevent them from working or failing.

To anyone who owns this kit on his Edge, please share your thought and experiences as there are a lot of people out there seems to be interested in this product. I would also love to see some pics or videos if possible.

Unfortunately, the LED bulbs are different than HIDs in that they have a large heat sink and fan on the back to cool the LED power circuitry. With HIDs you can make holes to pass the wires through the dust cover without any real loss of protection. With the LEDs, you would have to make a hole big enough for the heat sink to fit and then the fan will be defeating the very purpose of the dust cover by blowing through the hole you made.

yes this one will work, heat sink will be exposed but i tried like 4 kinds from $60 to the $199 dollars ones with all kind of claims 1200-4000lm per bulbs and real wattage from 9-30 watt, none of them impressed me barely close to factory. main problem with led headlights were the distance.

on the other hand morimoto hid 50w 4500k were crazy bright. none of the led even close to the brightness or distance of the hids.

btw i have 2011 edge sport.

Subscribed ! I want to buy some LED headlight bulb too !

Does this dust cover can work?

What do you guys think about the cooling design on these by XenonDepot.com? would they also require removing the dust covers?

Im more comfortable with this cooling design even if I was required to mod my dust covers, but im not sure if the cooling is as effective as they claim.

V-LEDS has a sale 20% off for memorial day and I am going to try the LMZ LED headlights. $200.00 on sale. I ordered the rubber dust covers, but then I saw V-LEDS sells them also. I just have the halogens on my 13 Edge right now. So when I get them installed I will take some pics of the difference and the installation process.

I got forced in to work the weekend, so I didn't get a chance to install them. I want to remove the lights and mount the controllers where the HID ballasts would normally go. I need to be able to drill some holes for the screws. I want to get them installed as bad as you want to see how they work. I have been trying to find the thread of how to take the headlights assemblies out.

I finally had a couple days off to get them put in. I mounted the controllers with some small stainless screws where the factory ballasts would go. You can see the controllers I used and they have very well made plugs that can only go together one way, and have screw together ends. I used the rubber boots that were listed above. You can see the LED mounted in it with the factory halogen bulb next to it.I found out that they don't fit tight enough to seal the back of the headlight assy. You can see the fan at the back of the LED bulb.

More in next post.

The LED bulbs slide thru the boot and then the collar that secures it to where it attaches to the headlight assy. screws on and is secured with a set screw. They are adjustable for depth and focus ( turning left or right ) The boots didn't fit tight in the back of the headlight assy. so I cut a 1/4 inch off around the outside so it would fit inside the factory dust cap. I used a hole saw to cut a 2 inch hole in the dust cap ( the same size as the back of the heat sink so the fan could keep it cool. You can see the back of the heat sink thru the dust cover. I still need to drill a small hole in the bottom of the dust cap in case any water would get in there to keep the fan from being a propeller. I got a couple pics out of sequence that show the LED's lit before I installed them. The first pic of the front ( drivers side ) still has the factory halogen bulb for comparison and the next pic ( of the passenger side ) shows the LED installed so you can see what it looks like. The next pic shows them lit on my garage door ( during the afternoon ) ( halogen on left and LED on right ) then with high beams on and then with both LEDs lit. Then with the LEDs at night and then from down the street of the front of my edge. I only had a chance to drive it down my street (which has street lights all over the place ) to really evaluate them. I didn't drive farther because it was my only day off and I was enjoying some wine with friends and I don't drink and drive.

Hopefully in the next couple of days I can drive it at night some place where it is really dark and take some pics.

So far I really like the way they look and the color 5000K whiteness that matches my other led DRLs.

I will keep you informed.
