quincy
Greetings all, New to the forum and I hope someone can help out. I own a 2012 Ford Edge SEL with the 3.5L V-6. ~ 30K miles. I was performing some routine preventative maintenance today that I have done for years on other vehicles, including late model Fords. Using a turkey baster I sucked the power steering fluid out of the canister located on the passenger side near the front of dash. (fire wall to old timers) When I replenished the fluid in the canister the amount added to the refill line was not even close to the amount I took out. For example, I took out ~10oz but could only put back 5oz. This has me concerned. I warmed up the vehicle, turned the wheel back and forth to full lock multiple times. Then took her out for a multi mile spin. Brought her home and still the fluid level was not low. I know it sounds silly, but I am concerned I did something wrong and will destroy the steering system. In the old days ps systems were self bleeding if air got in, which I do not believe happened in this case. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. macbwt
Hummm. I would run with it and check it for a few days and if the level stays the same and no sounds or whinning noises not worry about it any further. If it were me doing it I would just mark it up to me forgetting how much I took out.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
According to the 2007 FSM, you have to raise the front wheels off the floor and maintain a vacuum of 20-25 in Hg with a Vacuum Pump Kit 416-D002 (D95L-7559-A) or equivalent with the engine running while performing the maneuvers you described. That should purge the system of any air.
quincy
Thanks for the feed back so far. Please note the vehicle was not running when I sucked out the old fluid with the turkey baster, and I only removed fluid to the bottom level of the reservoir. I did not remove the hoses or drain the pump or steering rack. I've been performing this procedure for decades with all my cars. I don't understand how fluid in the rack and pump, located below the reservoir, can surge upward into the tank. Any other feed back is appreciated. Thanks. quincy
Well, its been some time now and I've put several hundred miles on the Edge. I've checked the PS fluid level each time I come home and in the morning. No change noted, no drop in level. Strange happening.
