Reverse cam woes

Recommended Posts

A few thousand miles ago we started having intermittent problems with the reverse cam. First it was upside down, then it would occassionally go blank, flicker and sometimes flash green. I tried to get the dealer to look at it while it was in for an oil change but the dealer wouldn't touch it without charging us like $100 to diagnose it. Since I was sure they would just reset it and temp fix it I passed. Sure enough that is what I did and all was well until this week. Now we are getting the msg to take it to the dealer. So I tried a master reset and it didn't help the first two times we went in reverse, then the cam worked fine, then late in the day flipped, flickered and flashed green. Obviously I need to get this adressed but I am reluctant to pay to get this diagnosed since you can make it work temporarily and not actually fix it. Plus I really think it is a software/APIM issue since I have a bunch of other quirks. So even though that is covered under warranty it appears I can't get it fixed without paying something. I did a search and it seems flipped image is a cold weather issue but today it did it and it was 34 so I don't know if that is my problem. For anyone that has had similar issues, what was the fix? I need to narrow this down as the dealer doesn't seem to want to help.

Good luck. I took mine in when the temp was 15° out, with the TSB. My dealer said it probably wasn't the same problem. Seemed like they didn't want to even look at it. I fear with sync 3 on the horizon we'll start to get a lot if dealer reactions like that.

You should push to have the APIM tested under the Ford extended warranty for the APIM if this has not been done. Computers do wierd things when they are broken. And just a bit of humor but you can't drive your car in reverse by standing on your head in the seat? I would suggest asking Ford Service for assistance on this forum.

I have had the APIM replaced a few times and most recently at this same dealer. But the problem is they won't even diagnose if it is an APIM issue without you paying their diagnostic fee. I just refuse to dumb any more money into this system that has never worked right since day one, especially when I know with a reset/reboot you can sometimes make these bad behaviors go away for a short time. Just long enough that they keep your money and you don't truely have the thing fixed. But I agree with xK317Hx; I think with the new platform coming out we are going to see little to no support going forward.

Had that last time and dealer wouldn't budge. Without the diagnostic fee they wouldn't touch it. I can try another dealer but up until now this has been the easiest dealer to work with but they still aren't that great. Other issue is last time I needed a new APIM they had the car for like a week, so I am reluctant to go too far away for a different dealer as it becomes difficult to shuttle back and forth.

I have had the picture upside down three times over 3.5 years. The APIM was replaced for other reasons after the first event and it still happened again this winter.

Also, it gets vey cold here in winter (-25C) and the problem is very rare on mine, so it isn't just the cold (I think the first time it happened it wasn't below freeziung).

Mine works fine otherwise though.

Yeah think there is more to my issue beyong the cold too. Like I mentioned yesterday it was pretty warm and it happened. Plus the flickering image with green flashes sounds like something else. I suspect the APIM since we are having other issues but didn't know if anyone had luck resolving this. Seems like a typical MFT issue...sometimes you see it other times you don't.

F#$&! This thing is going to drive me to drink. Sometimes it works completely fine other times it works for the first few seconds then shuts off saying I need to see the dealer. I just know they won't touch it...this is so aggrevating. This truck has had more issues than any other ride I have owned. God help us all after Sync 3 comes out and the hopes of extended APIM warranty completely vaporize.

wlepse,

Let me look into this further. What’s the current mileage on your Edge?

xK317Hx,

Was your concern resolved? If not, I’ll be happy to check my resources on this end. Which model year is your Edge, and what’s the current mileage?

I would suggest asking Ford Service for assistance on this forum.

macbwt,

Thanks for the mention, and enjoy the rest of your day! ;)

Tricia...we have under 60k but not sure exact mileage as it isn't my DD. I think we are close to 59k though.

Let me get this escalated, wlepse.

Please PM your full name, VIN, dealer, and best daytime phone number. I’ll loop in a customer service manager for your region to assist. :)

Back to dissapointment...dealer won't look at camera without paying diagnostic fee...Ford rep won't authorize testing of APIM either. Back to thinking about getting rid of this truck. Just so frustrating to deal with this and the lack of support.

Leads me to believe they know the issue, and know it must be a pricey or tedious fix, but don't care enough to even try.

Had a situation with my first gen Mazda 3. Weak point in the dash caused a massive crack dash needed to be replaced but my local dealer said it was just too much work. LOL They even gave me copies of the official "how to replace" instructions. If I wanted to do it myself.

Has anyone ever used the A/V inputs in the console? I think I used it once when we first got the truck but found it to be useless so I don't remember how it is supposed to work. The reason I ask is my belief is the APIM is acting up so I tried this connection figuring it would utilize the same part of the board...so if one doesn't work the other might not either. Well plugged in a know good device (tested before and after) and I can get audio but no video when I select A/V input. Vehicle wasn't running, so obviously it was in park. Is there any other interlock?

Next step to troubleshoot will be to pull the rear hatch cover off and get at composite video connector and test from there. Just sucks I have to do this rather than Ford stepping up and testing the APIM.

After searching for this code C1001 - ODDTCS Vision system camera online I found another ford forum maybe it was explorer or ranger....but anyway there was a long thread about the rear cameras. Seemed to fall right in line with what people are posting here, camera goes wacky dealer wants anywhere from $250-$500 to replace.

Most of the folks over in that forum that had their cameras replaced reported that this fixed the issue. They also said the new camera needs to be formatted/programmed so that the parking guides will appear on screen. I found a ford parts site that has the camera for just over $100 shipped so I'm going to order and replace mine. I'll let you all know what happens.

Here is the link to that forum.... http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=318879

I have a tough time believing it is the camera. It is a pretty simple device and I think all it gets is power and it outputs over a composite cable. So one would think the power is constantly cycling on and off to the device so even if there is some board in there that is messed up the behavior would be independant of other systems. What I mean by that is rebooting the MFT should have no effect on its performance but I can get it to work again temporarily by rebooting or resetting the system...or when I did a software update.

Can anyone confirm the functionality of the A/v input in the console though? Like I said I get sound but no video so I am wondering if the part of the APIM that control the analog inputs is flaky. Hoping to get a chance tonight to pull the rear hatch cover off and input a signal over that cable to confirm the cable/APIM.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well I was all set to replace this on my own then today the camera started a new weird behavior. The truck was backed into the garage so I went straight from park into drive. To my surprise the display was showing the cam, so I double checked and confirmed it was in drive. I pulled out and stopped for the garage door to close. Started to drive and still had cam on display. The only way I was able to get it off was to put it in park and back to drive. Thought it was a fluke but happened two more times. So in addition to a camera problem could I have a bad switch in the shifter? Anyone know what contact enables the cam?

For anyone that is having camera issues and wants to swap out the camera (if thats the defective part) here is what I did to get the camera out.

post-22596-0-51188100-1430185876_thumb.jpg

First remove the 4 screws in the hand grip area of the lift gate.

Next pop off the big interior panel. Kinda have to tug a bit but is will come off.

locate the 6 nuts across the back of the trim piece and remove.

Now find the the 2 plastic push clips on either end of that row of nuts. Squeeze with a needle nose and push out.

Undo the small black wire connector and the flat grey one.

I popped out the plate lights and wire harness prior to any of this..

Now that its off the ONLY way to get the camera out is to remove bracket holding it down....this is tricky.

post-22596-0-58808200-1430184771_thumb.jpg

This is the bracket.

It has one star head screw holding it in.

post-22596-0-11181700-1430184850_thumb.jpg

You will see the back of it in that hole.

Getting to the front will only happen with tiny tools. OR...you can do what I did and Dremel a slit in the tip of the screw and use a tiny flat head to back it out.

post-22596-0-40173000-1430184975_thumb.jpg

No guts no glory LOL

I reassembled in reverse order..camera/ bracket/ screw(if for some reason you royally screw up in removal I suggest a very small nut and bolt combo to reattach the bracket) wire harness/ lights....

So one thing I noticed when ordering a new camera is that there is 2 listed a older dated one and and a newer one. Im going to try the newer one and see what happens. I base this fix souly on reading other forums and people having this issue fixed at the dealer, stating that the fix was replacing the camera and reprograming it to get the guide lines working.

DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility for anyone who screws their car up. Attempt at your own risk!

Nice idea on slotting the end of the screw. I will have to double check mine to see if there is any projection from the plastic. I don't recall there being any but I wouldn't need much. I had started to pop that black plastic piece off where the lights are mounted then chickened out. The clips seemed too fragile and the painted part seemed to deform. Since I didn't want that piece falling out one day I will definitely try your method. Let us know how it goes with the camera. In a few places where I saw two cameras listed they both had the same P/N but one clearly says to a certain build date. Not sure why the part numbers are the same.
