Jillo79
Now that my project is finally done I thought I'd share. (You can see my other thread for my subwoofer upgrade). I have an SEL+ but wasn't happy with the sound. I was expecting the Edge Audiophille system to sound as good as the Audiophille from my previous Limited Exploder. Not so much... I took out the door pods that hold a 4" speaker and tweeter. I put in my own Ascentant Audio 6 1/2" speakers. I made a fiberglass mold of the fake grill section on the door. I cut out the part where the speaker actually is and then covered the fiberglass with speaker grill cloth. Then I decided to put the tweeters in the A-Pillars. I went with some Seas textile tweeters. I did lots of fit tests to get a good angle with some PVC pipe so the tweeters would be angled towards the seats. Then I fiberglassed the whole pillar. I finished them off with some black suede. You can see the angle better in the second pic. Here are my sub and speaker amps under the rear seats. I am really happy with my new set-up. I listen to a lot of Classical, Jazz and Hip-hop and have been pleased with all. Happy New Year!
monkey-1
Great fabwork! I would like to upgrade the stock speakers in our Edge too, but after I recover from Christmas.
chazman1117
Outstanding work! That being said... I would be very concerned with the fiberglass on the a pillar as the airbag runs under it and in a deployment situation the fiberglass would become projectiles. Please reconsider this. securinu
i thought all the edges had 6x8's in the doors. we have done 15-20 with upgrades and all had 6x8's. Havent heard Seas in almost 20 years they were great back in the day late 80's i had them in all my show vehicles. Where did you find them??? EdgeNut
Nice fabrication work! (and interesting point about the A-pillar and curtain airbag...) Are you still able to lower the rear seats all the way down with your amps installed underneath? I'm considering an upgrade as well, but thought I'd put the amp under the drivers seat to save the fold-down functionality.
Jillo79
Chazman - first off, thanks for your concern - I did consider the flying projectile part of my pillar conversion project. It's not full blown fiberglass, just the glass part with no fiber and only the bottom part around the speaker. The rest is just a light covering and then the whole thing is covered with the suede super-duper glued on. I really don't see it shattering because of the fabric but did consider that in the build. Securinu - I don't know about the other Edge's you've worked on but mine is an SEL+. The 'pod' in all 4 doors is 6X8 shaped but has two distinct speakers inside. I can post up a pic if you'd like to see one. As far as the tweeters I love the Seas as well. I have them in my home audio towers. Here's a link to where I got them at Madisound. EdgeNut - There was almost no room under my front seats due to all the mechanics and the heater components. I can lower the larger seat to flat but the passenger side doesn't quite make it. That being said it is fairly easy for me to disconnect it if I ever really needed it truly flat. Happy New Year! Cheers!
reef180
Very nice install... I attempted a similar install this weekend. New speakers in the front doors, replaced stock 8" sub with a new JL 8" W3 sub in the stock enclosure (dynamatted the entire enclosure and added polyfill), along with two new amplifiers for the doors and sub. Question, where did you tap the speaker lines for your line out converter? I tapped into the lines behind the stock head unit. Just curious as I'm having trouble with the sub amplifier. No sound output. Just curious if I am pulling from the wrong location... I am using the Hi-Level inputs on both amps. Ground, remote and power to the amp all good. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Jillo79
Reef - I put my LOC in the same location. I have all the RCA's going into the sub and then split them off into the front speaker amp. Can you call the amp manufacturer to see if they have any ideas? Mine are boutiques so it's easy to get ahold of the guy that makes them. Good luck, sorry I'm not more help.
