bapierce
My 2007 ford edge just cracked the primary timing chain sprocket for some reason. So I'm trying to figure out if it's a non-Interference or not. Can't really find any information about it. One site I found says it is not but then another one I found says it is. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Definitely not clearly stated, though likely to be non-interference stock. Some info on the 3.5L Duratec engine: http://wardsauto.com/news-amp-analysis/ford-motor-co-duratec-35-35l-dohc-v-6 http://www.supersixmotorsports.com/_pdf/cyclone-tech-v2.pdf Had a topic on this forum, but no clarity there either: http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/9007-interference-or-non-interference-engine/ EDIT: Updated below. bapierce
Thanks for the info. I'll try calling a ford dealership tomorrow and hopefully they can give me an answer. I don't think any of the valves got bent, didn't sound like anything was getting hit when I cranked it over before I took it apart.

WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Ok, so I asked a friend who works for Ford, the info isn't available easily inside either! But he pointed me to this site: http://www.ford-taurus.org/taurusinfo/Engine/ From the pic & specs, it looks like it IS an interference engine. Sorry for any confusion in the earlier post. bapierce
Yeah I saw that site, but then I found another forum where someone was saying that on gates.com it said the engine was a non-interference engine. I called ford and they weren't able to find anything out, it didn't say if it was or wasn't in their computer. I guess I'll do a compression test and see if everything is okay or not. bapierce
Oh it's np. Any idea what could cause the timing gear sprocket to crack and the key that holds it onto the crankshaft to shear? Was running fine, and when I was pulling it into the garage it just shut down. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Is the sprocket plastic? Could be simple fatigue, or incorrect motor oil, or ... Here is a look into the problems with the older Ford modular engines, may shed some light: http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/
bapierce
No the sprocket is metal. Was using full sythentic 5w-20. I think I figured it out though. I think my tensioner is bad. I'm able to push it in with my hand which I don't think I should be able to. So I ordered a new timing chain and tensioner, see what that that does if the valves aren't ruined. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Good luck! Would love to see some pics if you have any
bapierce
heres a pic of the sprocket, still waiting on parts. Half of the key for holding the gear in place on the cranshaft is still stuck in the crankshaft so I gotta try to drill that out. Hopefully I don't damage the crank Edited December 29, 2014 by bapierce
bapierce
Got the engine back togather. Started it, and it wasn't running well. Did a compression test and number 6 is a dead cylinder. So going to just pull the engine and put a newer one in. We'll see how pulling the engine goes
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
What a PITA! Good luck with the swapout.
bapierce
After removing the plastic lip in the back under the window, there's tons of room to remove the engine. Shouldn't be a problem pulling it out the top. Edited January 12, 2015 by bapierce

zzyzzx
Actually I would assume that any engine with a timing chain is a interference engine, unless I had reason to believe otherwise.
bapierce
Yeah true, but conflicting results on weather it was or wasn't made me believe otherwise. Along with being able to spin the cams 360 degrees with no problem. Edited January 18, 2015 by bapierce
bapierce
Got the engine out. Was more of a PITA than I expected, but was able to pull it through the top. Looking through the intake and exhaust ports, the valves look fine. And looking down through the spark plug hole the cyclinder looks good. I'll tear it apart and hopefully find out what happened.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Where was the max effort expended? Unhooking the trans & sensors?
macbwt
How many miles were on the engine before it failed. This would make for a great Youtube video documentary.
bapierce
there's an engine support bracket on the far side of the engine. The bolts on that were really hard to get to. I had to pull the passanger side drive shaft out to get to them and it was still a pain. If you remove the rear exhaust manifold cat they would be easy to get to but it's also a pain to get to the backside nuts that hold it on.
bapierce
There was 110k on it. A youtube vid would of been a good idea but didn't want to take the time to record what I was doing. Maybe I can do it for putting the engine back in.

macbwt
If you want to video it and are not sure how to edit or create a video let me know maybe we can get a way to have you provide the video and I would edit it and put it together. This would be a great DIY that has not been done for the Ford Edge. Let me know.
