Some parts (struts, windshield wipers) simply fail with time, not mileage and no vehicle is immune. Your 12 year old Edge could have sat in a garage with near zero mileage and still have weak hatch struts simply because seals have broken down and are leaking the compressed air they were loaded with at a factory.
