Not sure whats going on

Hello,

I am unsure of what is going on with our vehicle right now. We have the 07 Ford Edge SE. I love this vehicle, bought from a small dealership used just 3 weeks ago with 89,000 miles on it, it now has 89,400 miles on it and we are having issues. We had to replace a seal in the transmission last week, which is no big deal...seals are regular maintenance. Now yesterday we were driving around and a really bad thud started...it continued until I got the vehicle pulled over and stopped. I never took it out of drive, it was able to drive after that again...but sure enough it did it again. It kind of feels like the vehicle wants to slow down when this happens. We also heard a grind, which seemed like it was in the middle area of the vehicle, not to the passenger or drivers side..like right in the middle. Dealer cant get us in until Wednesday morning. I have two very young kids...its Minnesota and its winter, we cant be taking risks driving with them. any ideas?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear about these issues! Do you have FWD or AWD? If AWD, I would suspect the PTU (low on fluid, fluid worn out, gears worn out etc). How does the transmission fluid look (red & clearish, no burnt smell, fill level)? I would have an auto parts store pull codes to see if there are any relevant service bulletins that might apply.

There are no transmission seals that are regular maintenance. My guess is either the bad seal is a sign of a bad repair job in the past, or whoever did the seal repair messed something else up. Since you have an SE, it can only be FWD, so it can't be anything other than the transmission, based on your description. With only 400 miles on your recently purchased vehicle, I'd expect them to step up and give you a loaner until they can take a look at it.

They are gonna give us a loaner. I did notice a small clanking going on while driving it today. I have a friend with a shop he is gonna put it up. What I hope for is not a full repair on the transmission. We can't afford that right now. My friend said not likely the PTU. And we just replaced Of the tranny fluid after having that seal replaced. I heard the Edges were wonderful vehicles...but after only having it for a short time I am concerned with our future for this vehicle. This will be the second time it goes into the shop.

Thank you, It is back in with the dealer now I should know by this afternoon what's going on with it. When we replaced the seal we refilled fluids. I am hoping for a cheap fix, and we are having a full body inspection done on it because we are leaving for West Virginia from Minnesota next Tuesday. I will update when I know more.

ALSO, it was the Output Shaft Seal that was replaced last weekend! We were losing transmission fluid almost faster than we were putting it in.
