RobertP
Love the sport edge I just purchased, but would like to get the rear window to open. I know it has the wiper blade, but common now, there has to be a way to get that baby to open up. Has anyone tried this yet?
Duckkarl
I'm kind of curious what you are thinking here. Do you want to be able to open just the glass instead of the whole gate? Or are you thinking about the glass rolling down so you can drive with it open? Rolling down might be kind of nice.
akirby
Anything's possible with enough time and money. But I question the benefit compared to the time and cost involved.
rwf78155
Really ? ....... Can I have some of what RobertP is smoking? Maybe he wants to do that so he can evacuate the smoke from his Edge !
PaulSchott
My wife's 2002 Grand Cherokee has the opening rear window, (flip up) and I think we used it once. You don't want to drive with it opened cause of exhaust gas. You can evacuate that smoke by opening the windows, I just don't understand why you would want to. good2Bking
Probably wouldn't work on the Edge with that rear spoiler, unless that was attached to the glass also. The flip-up glass used to be available on the 2012 and earlier Escapes but no longer available on '13 and newer. It might have been a "nice-to-have" but certainly not a must-have. Otherwise we'd still be seeing the option.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
The glass being curved probably complicates things some more. They can reroute wiring for the heating element/wiper etc., but the spoiler makes flipup impractical, and the curvature makes the slide-down-into-the-panel option a no-go as well IMHO. RobertP
lol....well I don't smoke fellas..sorry. Yes, I'm referring to opening the window rather than opening the entire back/latch door. Opening the window just to grab or place a few things(tools and such) would be ideal over opening the entire latch every time.
Dominatron2212
Everyone was so caught up with whether or not they could, they forgot to take the time to think if they should
Tacyon
I know you've just purchased your Edge so you've not experience this yet. But you DO NOT want to have the rear window down in any fashion. Take a drive down gravel road .. you'll only need about 1/4 miles worth. Then pull over and check out your rear window. Due to the aerodynamics of the Edge there is a rather large vacuum on the rear. Opening that surface will relieve that vacuum into your car. I know a gravel road is an extreme test but this way wouldn't have to drive for miles and miles to see the results. The rear of the Edge is a dirt, snow, water magnet. If that window opened, all that road dust and exhaust fumes would be inside. Did you get the vista roof aka BAMR ?
RobertP
lol. I think many of you are misunderstanding my thoughts on the rear window. I have no need or want to have it open while driving. My thought was to be able to access the back cargo area without opening the entire rear latch. Say I have something I want to pull out or put in..
akirby
No, I get it having owned explorers, expeditions and aviators. But going to the edge we never missed it. I'm sure they left it out for cost savings. There might also be a crash test advantage to having a one piece hatch.
Tacyon
OIC .. well .. never mind then. But at the same time .. I think the opening would be too limiting as to be useful.
JOEHIO
Had a '02 Explorer with a split rear gate, was great to lift up 1/2 (glass) to reach in for stuff. The3n got a '06.o split tailgate, missed it. Both were the Limited models, just a change in design, probably a cost saving factor, too. My '12 MKX has a power tailgate, must admit, I luv this feature.
PFIJ
Forget about the "quarter mile of gravel road test". We drive 4 miles on gravel roads each way from home to highway. Is there any effective "add on" deflector to minimize the dust build up on the back window and under the roof overhang? This is my only real complaint about this otherwise wonderful vehicle. enigma-2
No deflector that I know of. Have you considered using a glass coating to minimize the ability of dirt to cling to the glass?

Did you ever look at the size of your rear window, and the distance from the bottom of the window to the floor of the cargo area. unless you are an NBA player you may have trouble reaching your tool when you want to pull it out! enigma-2
you may have trouble reaching your tool when you want to pull it out! Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh, perhaps you could have worded this a little differently. This is a "G" rated forum after all.
