Ford SYNC Bluetooth Audio Streaming?

Recommended Posts

I have not yet purchased a smartphone, but I plan to buy one that's A2DP capable and has a built-in GPS receiver and is also fully compatible with Ford SYNC.

I'll either use Telenav or Garmin's new navigation software for smartphones.

Does anyone know if any combination of device and GPS software will stream the navigation voice over A2DP to the Ford Sync system?

It would be really slick if I could play MP3s, take phone calls and hear the GPS all at the same time and all the audio playback and muting was coordinated with each other as well as with the SYNC system and didn't require plugging in any cables.

I guess it all comes down to how bluetooth audio works. Does AD2P stream everything that would otherwise play out of the phone's speakers (like a virtual headphone jack) or does it only stream what is specifically coded by the software engineers to stream over bluetooth audio?

Anyone know the tech details?

I do not know any details but see that this post has been lingering for some time. As I am now starting my research to portable GPS compatibility I came across this post from www.syncmyride.com in the owners section by searching for "GPS".

"I've searched the net trying to find the answer and I found a lot of people asking the same thing, but no one actually confirming or denying The question is "if SYNC will stream GPS from a mobile phone through the speakers", and YES, YES it does. I should add, i'm using the Canadian version of the Samsung Blackjakc II (i616). Not listed on the tested list, but never the less it works with bluetooth audio streaming. The cool thing is that I downloaded mobile Sirius for WM5 and it works brilliantly with GPS still running. So, it doesn' mute the music when the next GPS prompt comes through, but the volume is perfect that it clearly comes through with the music playing, at any volume. It's a good feature to have so you can listen to music when using the mobile GPS. Good news so I don't have to get a stand alone GPS."

I hope this helps anyone looking for GPS through their phone.

Thanks for the heads up. I just downloaded the Android version. While the reviews of the app don't leave me to optimistic, at least it appears to be a step in the right direction.

Yep - sure will work.

I have an Xperia X10 running Android 2.1, and the Bluetooth picks up whatever audio output the phone is generating - games, movies, and yes, GPS (have done it with the Google Maps app).

I just got my super GPS setup working:

NookColor tethered to MyTouch4G with an app called TetherGPS.

The app will share the GPS data from my phone and send it to my NookColor (which has no GPS receiver of its own).

NookColor is Bluetooth connected to SYNC's "audio" profile for Music and Nav. (You need to be rooted to activate the dormant BT chip found on the Nook's SoC [same chipset and OG Motorola Droid]).

MyTouch4G is Bluetooth connected to SYNC's "phone" profile for calls.

Now, I get Google Maps Navigation (which blows NavCrap clear out of the water) on a 7" capacitive touchscreen, Pandora or Grooveshark streaming and phone capabilities.

Mind you, I only use this setup on longer trips. Otherwise I just use my phone or in-car Nav.

(Side news: Google Maps 5.7 for Android [out today] supports downloading of offline maps in Labs!!)

Sounds cool! Where are you mounting the Nook?

I'm still working on narrowing down my options. I have this new case for the Nook that allows it to stand up like an easel, so I've been setting it on the passenger seat. The other option that I want to get working is on the driver door handle. I'm researching mounts for it right now. stats.gif
