Dr Fildo
The trans in my 2008 AWD has been chattering or clunking going at a slower speed, maybe around 40 mph as it tries to upshift. If I press the pedal down hard - no more problem. So last night as I was beginning to go forward after a traffic light turned green, the engine reved very high and the car was sluggish to get moving - almost like the trans was slipping - but once I reached about 30 mph, it operated normally. But started very slowly every time I had to stop. The little wrench indicator was too. This morning... car ran fine. No service light. What is going on?? I read on this forum about a OSS(?) sensor in the trans that has a reputation for going bad, but my symptoms don't sound exactly the same. How can I read the codes? WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Sorry to hear about the problems, possible that the trans is starting out in a higher gear from stop (there is a TSB related to that). That would be a Transmission Range sensor going bad. Codes can be read with an OBDII reader, and major auto parts stores should be able to read them for you for free. rgigowski
Not good to let the motor rev and the transmission slip while getting up to 30 mph. A trick to get the computer thinking again is to shut of the motor allowing the code to reset. Then slowly put the vehicle in reverse and allow the car to backup a few feet, put it in drive, move forward and then repeat. You should hear/feel the transmission clunk between drive and reverse. Carefully accelerate in drive and it should be fine unless there is a hard failure. I have done this a couple of times with success. I know I will eventually have to have something serviced and replaced but both times this happened, the conditions were different leading me to believe I may have two issues. Good luck... All of these are for different years.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Same TSBs apply, these are the latest iterations. 2007-2010 are same generation anyway. Wouldn't hesitate to take a copy of the TSB to the service writer as long as the problem description is a close fit.
Dr Fildo
Thanks for the quick responses. The codes would be stored in the computer even though today and yesterday it seems to be running fine with no service light on, right? Dr Fildo
Rgigowski - So you haven't resolved these issues yet? I'm wondering how much this type of thing is to repair...
Dr Fildo
Well, the car died while my wife was driving to work. Total trans failure. Was told by 2 shops and eventually towed it to Ford. $4700.00 later I have a new trans.

Dr Fildo
Not happy. So I got the car back a week later. The day after we picked it up, I noticed that the car is still jerking between 40 & 60 mph with gentle acceleration. I brought it back to Ford. They told me that coil #5 needs replacement. They wanted to charge me a little over $350.00 to do it. I bought the coil and am in the process of replacing it right now. I have doubts that this could cause the kind of shifting privileges I am experiencing.

WWWPerfA_ZN0W
You are right to be wary of the single coil issue, it could very well turn into a PCM issue. But could it cause jerkiness? Sure. Why it started after trans replacement, I do not know.
Dr Fildo
Well I replaced the #5 coil and plug. It seems to have fixed the jerking problem. I'm guessing the trans problem and the coil problem were unrelated, but I guess I probably won't find out.
akirby
Be aware that there could be a problem with the pcm that fries the coils and vice versa. Good news is its covered under the emissions warranty which should be at least 8 yrs 80K miles.
Dr Fildo
Too bad I'm over 80k. 96,000+ currently. I'm hoping it isn't the PCM.
