mcali6301
Haven't seen this subject yet. What would this consist of? There are too many areas that don't look like they get wet at all....
mcali6301
Any insight on this? My engine block is black and I'm not sure if it's dirt or what...Whatever it is, it does not wipe off with a rag. I don't remember the top of the engine being black... I know there are DIY's for cleaning engines and they it's very simple but then throw in all these DONT's so how easy it really as it pertains to the EDGE engine in particular?? macbwt
Don't know. Have never cleaned the engine. Seems to run fine dirty or uncleaned.
akirby
It's not difficult. Cover the power distribution box with plastic. Don't use a power washer and run the engine until it's dry afterwards.
richy
I've washed mine on my MKX a few times. Power wash gently and then spray Zep purple degreaser and agitate. Power wash rinse thoroughly. Dry with a leaf blower. Dress the plastic for the win.

richy
Richy: Do you keep the engine running when you detail it? Nope, nor do I start it afterward.
akirby
Nope, nor do I start it afterward. But you do dry it off, right? Leaf blower?
PaulSchott
I got my 2007 with 82,000 miles and I'm sure it was never washed. There were no leaks and the dirt was mostly sand, dust and some leaves. I used a hose with a nozzle on it and it came out clean. After I used some soapy water on a paint brush to get into the corners where it looked dirty. A second rinse and then started right up. I let it run for a while to heat it up and evaporate any water in the engine compartment. The first time you do this on a new vehicle it can be scary. I've been doing this for years and the only time I ever had a problem was using a leaf blower to dry it. It seems that the blower can force water into areas that you shouldn't get wet. Just use your head and stay away from electrical as much as possible. Modern connectors are water tight but may not like direct soaking. callatis
When I was using an Engine Cleaner from Canadian Tire I was getting a kind of oxide on some of the parts. Not a nice and shiny look at the end. Anybody else got something similar?
factor99
That is a cheap de-greaser and don't think it is somehting a detailer would use. The Zep Purple Richy mentioned above is avaliable at Home Depot and Canadian Tire. There is a weaker orange one if you want to start more carefully. They are only $12-14 for a gallon jug. I use the orange on my tires and wheels with no ill effects. Edited May 14, 2015 by factor99
