mcali6301
Been noticing that my transmission is slipping a little more lately. I notice some slippage only when in heavy stop and go traffic, I slow down and then press the gas, the transmission slips and then a thump. It's very rare that it happens and only happens when in motion so I kind of chalk it up to the heavy traffic.. Today however I noticed for the first time it slipped while going down the street after I slowed down and pressed the gas again, no stop and go traffic this time... Also from time to time I notice the transmission does not switch gears smoothly, the transmission would switch gears with a pause in between them. This happens most of time although not all of the time and it seems as though it depends on how much gas I'm giving it and seems to always happen if I'm going uphill. In all my years of driving I have never noticed this in car. I am still under the maintenance plan so supposedly my car is well maintained and transmission fluid should be good. Is this normal or should I be bring my car in?
2011edgese
Yup... mines too. does not happen frequently but it happens. If you research around it seems like it's a common problem on these cars.hopefully our transmissions don't fail because of this issue.I like the car lot and would hate to get rid of it because of it
2011edgese
if you take it to the shop, the technician will have to make the problemhappened to him and order for them to do something about it.
fishx65
My 2011 SEL with 48,000 miles has done it about 3 times. I have not taken it in but I better before the 50,000 mile mark.
Jackman5000
There is a tsb that fixes it. Totally free. Look around on this site. Print the tsb and take with you to ford dealership. Takes an hour
youri631
Mine was doing the same thing, it would always happen around 40 km/h (sorry, canadian speed here) when i would slow down then gently give gas again. The transmission would not shift immediately and then would shift in a very hard way. I took it to the dealer and they did the TSB for free. It is a lot better now and havent noticed it lately. Getting the shop to diagnose it was a little bit tricky as they will charge you if they don't replicate the problem and decide not to fix it. I agree with jackman, print the TSB and bring it to a trusted dealership you have a good relationship with.
mcali6301
Thanks all! What is the TSB and where can I find it?
youri631
Sorry, I was away for a while. Not sure exactly how to find TSBs online. Installed 7T4Z 7Z490 D : Plate and gasket ASY Qty: 1 Installed BT4Z 7Z490 B: Plate and gasket ASY Qty: 1 Installed CXT 10 LV 12 : Fluid - Transmission. Qty : 6 Hope that helps. Jackman5000
I have the printout at home but won't be there until Thursday. Just dig around in this site. I haven't had a slip since the work was done. Kinda funny; they acted like surely I was just dumb customer while I explained. Then I pulled out the TSB printout and they all the sudden they were like , "oh THAT transmission slip". Lol. I am not impressed with fords service guys. They all act like they are doing you a favor to fix the 30,000 dollar car that's under warranty and messing up. We have a toyota tundra also; in my experience, toyota service shops are 100 times better than ford. Like the edge but probably done with ford because of their after sale service. mcali6301
here is what I have found. Even though I have no issues at accelaration after a full stop....Is this it? tsb13-03-18 Ford Edge 2011-12 PCM Reprogram.pdf
youri631
This TSB is for the right issue. It mentions a rolling stop, not a full stop. However this TSB will only have them reprogram the PCM. Although I have not read it, you probably need TSB 11-12-10 for them to replace the separator plates (as per my previous post, this is the one referred to on my bill after they have done the work)
youri631
A quick google search with the TSB number and it easily came up. TSB 11-12-10: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=176597 Notice that the TSB mentions: built on or before 4/15/2011. So this particular TSB may not apply to your vehicle, in that case TSB 13-08-13 you found earlier may be all that is required. l
Nicknack
Thanks for posting the TSB. I bought a 2011 Edge Limited a couple of weeks ago. It drove great for the first week and then over the last 4-5 days, I've noticed the transmission issues described above. With my vehicle, it happense when I am stopped and then begin to accelerate. When it first happened, there was no jerk but it just felt like it was slipping out of gear when accelerating at about 5-10 miles an hour. Then the the issues got worse over the weekend. It now has that slipping out of gear feel but also a big jerk/kick as it accelerates. I would say it now happens about 40% of the time when accelerating from a stop. Even worse, two days ago as well as yesterday, the transmission got stuck in first gear. The first time, I was turning on a 45 miles per hour highway where I needed to pick up speed fairly quickly when I experienced a problem in which my vehicle was stuck in first gear. I pulled over as quickly as I could, tried some things but nothing would get it out of first gear except turning the car off and restarting it. I would say my transmission is having a few issues. I took my vehicle in for service this morning. I will be irate if they come back and tell me they couldn't replicate the issue. All one would have to do is go out for a 5-10 minute drive and you would definitely experience the issue at least once if not more. Getting stuck in first gear has only happened twice so that probably won't be replicated by service. Fortunately my Edge is still under the 5yr/60K powertrain warranty. I took the TSB in with me but who knows. I found out that the date of my vehicle build was March fo 2011. mcali6301
One thing I noticed is that if you are on a freeway going downhill and you tap the brake, the car will automatically downshift to provide engine braking. You most likely have to be going highway speeds for this to happen as it's the only time I notice it. Just want to make sure that's not what's happening. Nicknack
The problem has ONLY occured when I'm at a stop (or nearly a stop) and accelerating at 5-15 miles per hour which is when the vehicle needs to shift. It slips, hesitates and then I feel a big jerk or "bump" (as TSB 11-9-1 puts it) like I'm riding a bull and it's trying to toss me. When the vehicle gets stuck in first gear also only occurs when the car is accelerating from a stopped position (of very close to it). My vehicle has been at the dealership 7 hours now and after a call they told me they don't know anything yet. I'll report back when I learn more. My fingers are crossed. mcali6301
Finally took her in to get the battery replaced, (it was bad) had them check the tranny while there and they found an issue with some gasket which affected shift quality and they have to replace it and should have it done by Thursday :happy feet:

mcali6301
Just spoke to the mechanic, he said that they had to update the Valve body gasket and check balls. Doing some research, this seems to fix gear changing issues. here's a video on the fix that I found randomly... I don't have the car back so I can't confirm this really fixed the issue but I have confidence that it did....We'll see.... 2011edgese
Mcali.. are they charging you for this TSB?and rtsb free of charge all the time if it does fall in the TSB category as the main issue.? Also does the dealer charge a inspection fee to confirm its the TSB? Or is the whole job free if it is the tsb?
2011edgese
Mcali..one more question, when you went inside the dealer did you go with the TSB in hand and a 12 gauge shotgun strapped to your back or did they inspect the car and told you its a tsb fix? WWWPerfA_ZN0W
TSBs do not have implied warranties. Must be explicitly stated on the TSB that it is covered by Ford. If you have a Ford warranty and the components in the TSB are covered, the total cost - any deductibles are covered. As far as dealer inspection fee, that is incumbent on the dealer; some charge, some don't. They will want to replicate the symptoms mentioned in the TSB first. If they have a great relationship with you, they may work with you anyway.
