macbwt
What do you need to change or replace on a 2008 Ford Edge with 230,000 miles. I have replaced a total of three wheel bearings with the right front requiring two. (more on that later). I have just finished replacing on both right and left front the following parts. The strut bearing mounts (right front was completely worn) making thumping sounds. The struts (both were completly worn and when pushed down did not extend) I recommend changing the struts and Mounts at 100k as it would be a much better ride. I also changed out the lower control arms/ball joints ( note these are press on and all one unit) The rubber sleeves in both control arms appeared in great shape, but the ball joints were loose with the right front ball joint being very worn and moving) The tie rod ends (outer) were both easily moved to the point that replacement was a better soulution. The Sway bar links had to be replaced just due to the fact that the bolts were so rusted that cutting them off was the only option, so plan on this. The right front wheel bearing was repalced a second time due the the strut and ball joint being so bad that the pressures on the bearing caused it to fail prematurely. The rear shock were changed when tire wear indicated that the shocks were worn, tire wear went away when this was done (look for cuping or inside abnormal wear on the inside tread. Test drive and my Ford Edge is now feeling like it did when I first bought it. Suspension always makes a difference. macbwt
26 Feb 2014, I had the last Hub assembly and wheel bearing replaced. The drivers side front and the passengers side rear. Both were the original bearing or hub and had 230,000 miles on them. This means all the bearings and hubs have now been replaced. Bonus....I can hear the radio.
Mark_Aaron_Thomas
I just bought a 2007 Edge and I get that thumping sound you described in regards to your strut bearing mounts. I have only had it a couple of days and this thumping is very inconsistent sometimes coming from the rear as well. At 94K mileage it is probably a pretty good bet that I should follow your recommendations, unless you think it is something else? Thanks,
macbwt
I would replace the entire thing, strut and the bearing mount. If it is the right front check the ball joint also. Edited March 9, 2014 by macbwt
PrinzII
Given that everything is probably rubber, could some of those items be replaced with polyurethane bushings?
macbwt
235,000 engine light came on. I suspected an O2 sensor and took my Edge to the repair shop. Further checks revealed the O2 Upper sensor was bad. I was also told that the plugs may need replacement as this could also cause the sesor to go bad. He took out the plug and brought them to me. The wire ends were completely gone with just the base metal in the plugs left. Total miles on the iridium plugs was 150,000 miles. So I guess the 100,000 change time frame is most likely a good time to replace the plugs. Now it is time to see if the gas mileage will be improved along with a little more power.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Wow! Surprised the Edge was still running with that little left on the plugs. Very very tough material.
macbwt
236,000 miles. Left front drive shaft is starting to make clicking sound. Will have to monitor this to see how it goes. Most likely will change both CV joints/shafts when the time comes. Left side has been moist since I owned it, but not leaking.
macbwt
Clicking was not CV shafts just an unseated bearing. A little more torque and noise is gone.
macbwt
240,500 miles power steering was whinning and discovered the tank was empty. Have seen spots on the concrete now I know what it is. Time for a new powersteering pump or something. Not sure what part is actually leaking.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Could just be the clamp on the hose. Have had a couple of folks with that problem recently.
macbwt
Turned out to be a broken line to the power steering pump. Ford dealer repair $270.00 the hose was billed at $100.00. Pretty pricey hose if I do say so. Maybe it is covered in gold.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
If it's a metal core hose, it can get pricey! Maybe they got this on a fire sale from the Pentagon's lavatory
fishx65
What to expect at 230,000 miles? How about a new Vehicle payment!!!!! Joking aside, pretty impressive that she's still kickin. Any rust or still pretty clean????
macbwt
Even though i live in Iowa the body shows no signs of rust. As far as new car payments I just do not buy new. I look for vehicles with40-60k on them and buy them. Note. I am still using the standard 5-20 oil and no problems. I figure the day I get a low oil pressure code is the day I put heavier oil in it and start looking for another car.
fifthranger
First off, congrats. Wife and I have same colored 07 Edge FWD that is near 94,000 miles. We hope to get 200k out of it. We have only replaced tires, front left tie rod, front and back brakes, thermostat, battery, and serpentine belt. Heater core and AC hose was replaced under warranty. Other than that, we have had only a trans flush at 54K. Today, I noticed a hiss coming from the power steering and added some fluid since it was low. macbwt
Masterpro part failure after 30,000 miles. I replaced the right front with all new suspension parts and the masterpro Strut bearing mount failed and failed quickly in just a matter of about a few days it went from and light clunking noise to full out clunking noise even driving down the interstate. Inspection revealed the internal bushing had failed and was allowing the strut to force its way up and down to the point that is was almost thrusting completely through the bearing. I would say that the strut bearings mounts made for this vehicle are definately needing some re-engineerings due to the number of failures noted on this site. Total cost for replacement $252.00. Mileage is now at 245,000.
macbwt
Well last oil change it was noted that the rear seal is leaking. Next change I will start using High Mileage oil to see if the additive can expand the seal enough to slow or stop the leak. I am afraid that at this point the $$$$ and the value of the vehicle will not be a good choice so I will drive it until I am ready to get rid of it or 300k whichever comes first. macbwt
As of now 252,000 miles and I am starting hear the whinning of a power steering pump that indicates it will be the next thing to replace. Tank is full so will wait and see. Just keep the bank card warmed up. LOL
akirby
So much for the "factory synthetic blend oil is crap and it won't last past 150K miles"........
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
I just hope people don't think it is a lifetime fluid and think of extending the OC to 150,000 miles
macbwt
LOL Think if I just drive straight the power steering pump will last longer? Anyway When the pump goes I will change out the original serpetine belt, yeah go figure, and the belt tensioner. One last thing as of now both the replacement strut bearing mounts I bought from Orielly's auto parts have failed. I changed out the right front one about a month ago and now the left front one has failed. Guess I will step this failed one up to the more expensive one that I replaced in the right front. This means I am now on set number two after the original factory set. Sad really as this is mostly highway driving and no real reason for them to fail other than the fact they are most likely cheap chinese parts. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Kinda hard to tell about quality nowadays even if you buy brand names. Are you going to put Motorcraft on the left front?
macbwt
Not sure of the brand. I will just go with what the other replacement was. Most of the time I just take it in and the shop fixes it as quick as they can since they know I will be hitting the road with it right after the repair.
