mechguy79
Hello all, huge transmission problem with wife's 07 Edge. We where driving in Dallas at highway speeds and when trying to accelerate moderately to keep up with traffic the Edge would shudder horribly. The shudder would go away with enough trottle to downshift, or letting off throttle. This happened several times. Another symptom is when accelerating enough to downshift one gear the torque converter would unlock (raise engine speed 200 RPM), relock, unlock again, then downshift. It does this almost every time now. Third symptom is when cruising at low speeds (30-40mph) the engine speed raises and falls 200 RPM about every second. Again, like the torque converter is locking and unlocking every other second. It is at the dealer now. They did a transmission flush and fill two months ago and the transmission has been noticiably flakey since. Any ideas what this could be? Something simple like a solenoid valve or sensor? Thanks all.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Since a flush & fill was done, I'd check the fluid level first. (Hopefully they put in the correct fluid.) Incorrect levels can cause all kinds of problems. After that, look for any leaks. Then, look at the TSS/OSS sensors as possible culprits. Check for codes? AutoZone or Advance Auto or major auto parts retailers should be able to pull them for you for free.
mechguy79
Dropped it off at the dealer. They kept it for a week. No codes found, and they claim they couldn't duplicate the problem, even though I was very specific of when the issues occur. They didn't charge me at all so I don't think they ever did anything. The edge still does it. When cruising at highway speeds up a slight incline the RPMs will go from 1500, 1800, 1500 within two seconds. If the incline is steep enough it will go from 1500, 1800, 1500, then downshift with a hard clunk. It will do this every time. I miss real mechanics. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Did you check the transmission fluid color & level? Any leaks? To check the level, according to the manual, you have to warm up the trans fluid to it's operating temp by driving around for about 20 miles, parking it (engine still running), working through the gears (allow 30 seconds each gear), and checking the fluid level after putting back into Park. Not the easiest, I know, but doable. Did you speak with the service manager/dealership manager? If they are unresponsive, take it to another dealer, and/or contact Ford National Customer Service. flyerjmr33
Mine would do that on occasion--- a fluid check showed it to be a little low. I added about a quart and have had no more problems for the past 3 months----
mechguy79
Nothing found so far. Fluid is fine, full, and I added a quart Lucas transmission treatment. Not the stop slip stuff, just the fluid extender stuff. Nothing has helped. I have no engine misfire, no codes, and two transmission guys just say "no code and their computer shows everything working fine". Figures. I still have the problem, and no one seems to have any ideas. I am sure it has something to do with the torque converter. I wish I could find an old fashioned mechanic that can diagnose with more than a damn computer.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Do you know of/have you heard of Rudy's Automotive in San Angelo? Only 3 reviews on yelp (one of my info sources), but a possibility. Love Field Auto in Dallas (yelp). Also Chris Murphy's Automotive in Dallas (repairpal). If you cannot find someone by W.O.M., then look at suggested shops on yelp, repairpal, aaa, etc. If they have been in business for some time, it is more likely they will be able to give you the "old school" approach you desire. macbwt
If it has not failed yet then most likely it will. The OSS sensor is most likely failing.
dpboone
Wicked Shudder Did anyone ever figure out what was the cause? My 2007 just started doing it. I had both front shafts/CV joint assemblys replaced. That did not help, but with 170,000 miles I was ok with doing that.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
If your Edge/MKX feels like it is driving over rumble strips or rough road, and you have eliminated misfires as the possibility (as the OP did), here is an article on Torque Converter Shudder that may help with the diagnostics:http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/203
macbwt
If it shudders changing gears on hills going up and down then also while stopping. Then your mileage is just about where the OSS transmission sensors start to fail. You will not get a code until they completely fail. Then you get a wrench, dashes across your ODO, low tire indicator and you loose over drive. If you are on the highway when it happens keep driving as it will continue to drive with slightly higher rpm. Once you stop you are pretty much done. Then you get to raid your piggy bank for about 800 dollars.
Tpanagrosso33
Was this ever figured out? My 2007 edge doing same thing, have replaced tss, and oss and still shudders and torque converter locking and unlocking, only shudders when torque converter is locking. I have to shut over drive off to get it to unlock to stop shuddering, if it is locked and not shuddering under acceleration, it will lock and unlock raising and lowering the rpms 200 rpms while doing that Edited April 1, 2019 by Tpanagrosso33
MechanikImNot
Let me proceed my comment by saying I do not recommend the following actions. I have readThrough the thread about 2008 Ford edge is shuttering Possibly being The OSS failing. The following is not recommended by OSS started filling on interstate I 10 at 80 miles an hour on mast the gas pedal and get my speed up above 70 after 80 miles I exited the interstate stopping at the nearest gas station at this point the edge did not want to leave what seemEd like a higher gear possibly overdrive. Angry and tired of pouring money into an older vehicle I decided to put the vehicle in drive and floor the Accelerator, the vehicle started to slowly get speed and at about 30mph at nearly 6000 rpms my edge jerked aggressively into a lower gear and accelerated as if power braked. Now this was just dumb luck that it actually workEd because I was ready for it to blow up and force me into a new vehicle. I have since done this twice more and now have 164,545 miles on the vehicle. My 08 Ford edge still shutters in between 1500 and 1800 RPMs But without fear Dropping my transmission I might actually get 200,000 miles if I’m lucky
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Or you could simply replace the TSS OSS sensors and transmission fluid. What you are doing will force the transmission into actual failure, rather than just the controls. What happens if you drive with O/D off? Does the shuddering stop or reduce substantially? Add a tube of Lubegard Shudder Fixx to see if that makes a difference. Edited October 17, 2020 by WWWPerfA_ZN0W
