Ford Edge "Dashboard Noise"?

Recommended Posts

HI! I am desperate to figure this out, as I've been through a few mechanics and nobody can find the issue. A little over six months ago, noises started emerging from my dashboard. The noise sounds as though a leaf has fallen in the air vent on the dash, and something is rustling/clicking around in there. It's like a reverberation type of noise.

The noise is present when I'm going 20mph or 60mph. They're not constant, but VERY annoying since they can last about five minutes when it occurs (and if you're driving at least two hours a day like me, it drives you to madness). They sometimes start when I slow my speed from going 50+ mph, but also happen when I've been at a steady pace going driving through my neighborhood. I've taken my car in about 6 times since the noise started. The first four or five times, they could not detect anything wrong. Then it finally acted up for the mechanic on the fourth visit, and he replaced my gear stick (it's automatic) in the center of my console. However, I was very upset after I paid the bill and still heard this noise. Then, I took it back a week later, and the mechanic at the Ford dealership insulated the area behind my glove box, as there was a loose coil. BUT, I AM STILL HEARING IT! Now, I'm starting to wonder if it's coming from the center of my dash/radio area instead of my right side of the dashboard. It's hard to tell since I'm not always in the passenger seat. Does anybody have ideas on what this could be or have you had similar issues? I really like the Ford Edge and it is in perfect condition other than this noise, but this might drive to me get rid of the thing and never choose Ford again.

Welcome. Can you give us more details about your Edge? Year & submodel, manual/automatic HVAC, etc. Where are you located?

Do you have the HVAC system on when the sound occurs? Check the cabin air filter behind the glove box. There may indeed be something fallen in there, maybe even into the blower motor. The motor could be going bad. Could simply be a wire/harness or insulation not properly mounted inside the dash / vents.

Are you sure its the dash? I hear what I can only describe as a very faint "chirp" or some very soft rubbing/scraping coming from the left door area. I have read others on here talk about a similar described noise and they said to use (dry) silicone lubricant on the door seal. My can of silicone spray is coming today and I hope it fixes it.

I just recently purchased a 2012 Ford Edge Limited and am having the same exact issue. It definitely sounds like it is coming from underneath the dash almost as if it is a leaf or wrapper of some sort blowing in the wind. Please let me know if the dry silicone lube works around door jams but it sounds like its in the dash.

I know this is an old thread, but any update on this.I have a 2014 Edge (purchased Feb 2015), and after 1000 miles I started having this cracking noise in the dash on the driver side. I have had it in twice now, and they still haven't been able to find to cause of it. I have another appointment in a week where 'their expert' will take a look. Both times they had it for a week, and only when I told them I needed it for the weekend did they look at it - (then whats' the point in making an appointment for monday morning??!!!). Anyway, I hope they will be able to find the problem this time.

Try the cabin air filter (open the glove box, squeeze the sides to allow it to drop farther and release the cable). There's a snap release to open the filter compartment. Look for leaves, etc. Mine had two small leaves in it. Might be a good time to replace the filter too - if you don't mind spending almost $30!

I just replaced my 2013 Fusion cabin air filter. OMG was it filthy and filled with leaves. I meant to change it years ago but just forgot about it.

It's a complete pain to get to though. You have to pop off the side trim and the trim above the dash with the hvac vent. Then you have to remove 4 bolts to remove the glove box. Then there are 2 more phillips screws on the filter door. Not sure if the Gen II Edge and MKX are the same or if they got smarter and put it back the way it used to be where you just disconnected the back of the glove box.

Takes me ~1 minute to get mine out (09 MKX). My guess is they changed it deliberately so owners will take it back it to dealer for service (they really rip you off - $12 if you do it yourself, who knows what they would charge in your case).

No, it wasn't deliberate. I think they just inherited that from the EUCD platform that CD4 was based on and didn't have time to re-engineer it. Remember your 09 was on the old CD3 platform.

I assume you can change the gen 2s by just popping out the glovebox like the older ones?

No screws in my '11. Just drop the box with the side tabs.

Re: dash squeaks - check the glove box rubber stops. My glove box was rattling and I finally narrowed it down to the rubber door stoppers. Replaced them and now nice and quiet. You probably could add an additional rubber 'foot' on the door also to make it seat a little tighter.

I bought my 2017 Edge with very little miles from a used dealer.  I believe, as we waited for the car, they changed all of the filters as I found out later.  Anyways, in driving it home on the highway, there was this very noticeable rattling, blowing sound coming from and below the glovebox area.  I took it to my local Ford dealer.  They removed my glove box and said that the cover to the cabin air filter was broken.  They said this often happens when someone changes the filter and doesn't know how to maneuver the cover.  To fix this problem, they can't just replace the cover.  They have to buy the whole part which is almost 1000.00 and then the labor is going to be almost a whole day's worth.  I couldn't believe it.  I am working with the dealer I bought it from to fix it (not a FORD dealer).  First they tried to just "patch" the plastic cover which did absolutely nothing.  I am taking it back.  Any insight on this or suggestions?

This is the first time I read/hear about a broken cabin air filter access door. Also I am surprised there doesn't seem to be a separate part number for the door itself. I'd suggest you check the access door yourself. If it really requires replacement, then try to go to a scrap yard. Look for any 2015+ Edge, 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX or 2019+ Lincoln Nautilus.

Note, see the video below, at around 1:50 he talks about using screws if the clips break. See if this where your door is broken. My 2016 came from the factory with both, the clips & screws. Seems they stopped using the screws on newer models.
