ELation
I don't remember it being this grainy before. How's your camera? Buddy's F150's camera is pretty clear at night... same drive way.
teknowiz
That is not normal, my 2011 MKX rear view camera is clear in day and night.

PrinzII
Mine is very grainy at night.
teknowiz
Actually mine was grainny yesterday after being in the heat all day when I went home and parked in the underground lot. It was fine again this morning. Could be camera has temp related issues. For thoese with grainny camera issue, does it seem to be worse in the hot weather and better during cooler? PrinzII
In my case, no. I have seen graininess when it's hot or cool. Edited July 18, 2013 by PrinzII
omar302
It seems to depend on the type of available light. I noticed that yellow street lights cause graininess. At darker areas without yellow street light the camera image would be clearer. Edited July 19, 2013 by omar302
PrinzII
That is leading me to guess that the backup cams are CCD.
omar302
An update to this same topic. Had always noticed that at night near my place, the camera display would be grainy, while at my Parents it is clear at night. Then I realized that I park in reverse at my place, meaning the Camera turns on after driving for a certain period, while at my Parents, I would park straight, so when I back up, it would be the 1st thing I do after starting. So after some testing, I found out that the rear Camera gets grainy at night after driving for some time (maybe heat?) but turning off the car (Center display off) for a few minutes (3-5 minutes) then turning the rear camera on (reverse), the display becomes clear!! Pictures speak for themselves! My 2011 MKX: Sample 1, at 9 PM: Same view at 10:43 PM (1:43h later): Sample 2, at 8:49 PM: Same view at 8:51 PM (2 minutes later) A buddy's 2013 Explorer: At 10:29 PM: Same view after less than minute later:
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Good point, omar. Camera possibly only meant for very short-term usage. No problems in daytime though?
omar302
Camera is ok in daytime. It is not that the Camera has been on for a long time, it is the vehicle that has. In all the above samples, the camera was on for less than a minute (mainly to get the photo sample).
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
What if, at night, you keep the ignition in ON and engine NOT running for a few minutes, then shift to Reverse (all without engine running)? Center console display would be on even in this state, right?
omar302
The screen has to turn off & then on for the image to become clear again.
