rjs_boy
I was driving down the road yesterday, and a lawn crew was mowing the median, as I drive by I hear this loud CRACK which scares the crap out of me and when I have a chance to figure out what caused the noise, I notice a nice large spiderweb looking crack in the middle of the glass on my drivers door. Does anyone have instructions/diagrams on how to go about replacing the glass?
JOEHIO
First of all, call your insurance company, then take it to a shop, and have them do it. I guess you could attempt it yourself, I wouldn't.
rjs_boy
Thanks for the response. Over the last 15 years of cars I've owned, I've replaced a lot of other items in the doors, but never had to replace the glass itself. I doubt the cost of the repair will exceed my deductible, especially if I can do it for the cost of parts. However, that is mostly speculation right now for me, I was hoping maybe someone here could provide some more insight, as I haven't had a reason to tear into an Edge door until now.Is there a specific reason you wouldn't attempt it yourself? Is there some special tools required, some special procedures? I'd just like to know what is involved to replace an Edge drivers door window, before I decide wether to pay someone to do it versus doing it myself. Gurufarmer
I haven't been in to the door panels on my edge yet and haven't replaced a side window so can't offer much incite to doing it your self. I broke one on an older car and had a shop replace it however in MN glass coverage is full glass coverage and you don't have to pay your deductible. Take a look at your window though. Mine and I'm guessing yours will also had dual pane glass with a layer of plastic in it. This is done to reduce the amount of sound that comes in and also should act like a windshield and if completely shattered the glass shouldn't completely fall out. You will probably want the same type of glass to replace it. If you roll the window down and look at the top if its dual pane you will see 2 different panes of glass.
rjs_boy
Thanks Guru. I will give the insurance company a call, but I've always been under the impression that in Florida, they only cover the Windshield. That would be nice if they cover the rest of the windows too. I was planning on using the Ford OEM glass, there are some parts of a vehicle that just really should be left OEM in my opinion.
Dingo
Not all edges have laminated front windows.
EdgeeOne
According to my dealer - there is a TSB on drivers door glass,- I looked the # up on https://www.ownersite.com/tsb/tsbs.cfm/2011/FORD/EDGE/ Bulletin No: TSB-12-1-5 .. I took it in for a bad door ajar switch, etc - a growing prob with these cars, they took the door panel off to put in the part (which had been back ordered) and the drivers door glass has stress cracks along the bottom so it is not seen above the sill until it gets worse. so they are going to put a new glass piece in. They also said the retaining clip mounts for the door panel in the door frame are broken.. and they will have to fix that. Glad I am still on warranty.
