TemeC
I think the thermostat is starting to stick on my 2009 Edge. Driving to work I saw the guage go from 192 degrees to 207, it stayed there for a few minutes then came down to the 192 degree area. I have a scan gauge and the temp is usually around 192 regardless of speed. On hot days i have never seen it go above 200 even with the a/c on and in traffic. On my way into work it was 65 outside, and although i was in traffic I have never seen it get that high. I am going to continue to watch it over the next few days, but am thinking it might be in need of replacement. The car has 105k on it. The autoparts stores carry two different temp thermostats. The 192 degree is listed as OE temp, but the 180 is listed as OE recommended temp. Does the 180 degree thermostat help in any way? I have seen where some people run a cooler temp thermostat on other engines that make a lot more power, but not sure there would be any benefit with the Edge. I consistantly average 22-23 mpg as I use the Edge to commute to work mostly. If the 180 temp will help improve that I may be interested in it. I havent been able to find any info on the pros/cons of either temp.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
A lower temp thermostat does help some in warmer climates, allowing the system to keep its' average temps lower. Don't know if the computer is programmed to accommodate lower temp thermostats, but I have not seen any significant impact on emissions mentioned on other forums (for other cars). What is the cooling system service history? Maybe it's time to get a flush, or at least change out the coolant and see if that helps. Are you sure the fan is working properly? Maybe the sensor is acting up? Probably too early to have set a code, but ...
