Jon Peisert
I have a 2011 Ford Edge Sport with the stock 22" wheels and they have started to peel! I'm unsure of what to do so I'm hoping someone here knows a better fix than buying new wheels.
akirby
Is it still under warranty?

Rockballer
They are aluminum, how does aluminum peel? Am I missing something here or do they have like a protective coating on them?
akirby
They're clearcoated - that's probably what's peeling. A good paint shop can re-clearcoat.

Jon Peisert
I will try the paint shop and see how much that is, the issue with the Web link is I need to take it off the tire. Which I don't have the means. But thanks for all the help!
Dingo
They're allegedly clear powdercoated.

akirby
Wow. That should definitely be warranteed. Unless it was cleaned with paint thinner.......
Jon Peisert
It was not cleaned with paint thinner.
akirby
It was not cleaned with paint thinner. I was joking about the paint thinner but have you used any type of harsh cleaner other than soap and water?
Jon Peisert
Oh Ok, no I haven't tried anything don't want to make it worse. It's bad now I don't want it looking like crap.
Dingo
Wait. Is that wheel grey?
Jon Peisert
No its black. If you look at the picture I have of my car you can see the whole car. I thought about buying new rims but they match to the T
Dingo
Aaaaaaaand there's the problem. Those wheels didn't come from Ford in black. Someone painted them since the car left Ford and did a poor prep job.
Edgieguy
Our wheels are powder coated clear after being polished. Apparently painting over powder coated parts requires a very specific prep and materials, maybe the previous owner did this in his garage, or simply didnt care enough to do a proper thorough prep?
