jay
Hi everyone! After 16 years with my 4-cyl Ranger, I bought a CPO 2011 Edge SE (with just under 20k miles) yesterday. I was actually in the market for an Escape but for anything with decent power and low miles, I was always too far apart on price. I saw this Edge earlier in the week and jotted down the VIN. After a few days of research, I ended up forgetting all about Escapes. Took a test drive yesterday and was the new owner 2 hours later.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Great find, and welcome to the community! Lots to learn, and hopefully lots to share Tell us more about your Edge ...
jay
It's a lease return and was on the lot for sale for about 2 weeks. It has 2 minor (to me) flaws: smooth dents in two places. I didn't notice them at first but made a lot of them during negotiations. The Maui market is a bit odd and decent inventory is not readily available (unless you buy new, or will consider much older vehicles). Anyway, I think I got a good enough deal but it might be a regional thing... $20,500, with 12 months comprehensive and 7 year power train. I typically drive under 8k miles per year. The mileage I'm seeing in the Edge so far is fairly low... 19 mpg ...but that's because I'm having fun with acceleration. It's a very welcome change from my old Ranger! It's also more fun to drive than my wife's 2006 Explorer. The SE trim suits me perfectly because I don't want/need any additional goodies and, unlike many other vehicles, the base model comes with a great engine. I even prefer the cloth seats. I wasn't expecting a capless gas filler. That was certainly interesting to discover. I'm probably going to switch out the antenna. It's not in a convenient place to remove for the car wash and I'm thinking one of those stubby ones from Craven Speed should be able to just stay on. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
The exterior color is black, right? A quick check on Edmunds says that dealer retail for a no-frills CPO SE in outstanding condition is over $23,000. You basically paid private party price for it. Good deal, I would say! I have no idea of the roadways around Maui, is your driving mostly city or highway? If city, you are getting the max rated mpg, which is pretty darn good. My Edge came with a missing antenna (!), so I put an aftermarket one on it. I use touchless washes only, so no problems so far, touch wood. Don't know if reception is as good as it gets though. I use a two-step ladder to access all areas of the roof. Some people even stand on the door sills for that purpose (!), but I like the ladder just fine
jay
Yep, exterior is black. My wife isn't too fond of it but I absolutely love it. And I'm the one going to drive it. LOL! I was very happy at the price but the two dents really did make it hard for them to claim completely outstanding condition. I wonder if the lease return had extra fees for this, driving down the amount of $$ the dealer had to pay for the car? I don't really know how leasing works on that end. Roadways on Maui are mostly highway-ish. Generally, traffic for me has been smooth enough that the brakes on my manual truck lasted the entire 16 years I had it. I am not at all taking it easy on the gas pedal with the Edge right now, though. My last trip to the supermarket 2 miles away got me 11 MPG! The live readout for mpg on the dash will help me tailor my driving habits to do better in the future. I also have a blue tooth odb2 adapter and will try to see what extra data I can get. My truck's info was minimal but that was a 1996 model.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Are you planning to use an Android or iPhone with the bluetooth OBD2 adapter? I am planning to implement this myself, but go with a hardwired Scangauge or Ultragauge for now. I hear Torque for Android is pretty a popular app.
Dingo
Torque is nice. I use it. I have since taken out the scangage. I have an SCT Live wire that I used on the old truck, but it will only work on Fords until 2010, so it's collecting dust.
jay
I used the free version of Torque (Android) mostly. There just wasn't a lot of data to be had from the truck, so I felt no need to get the paid Torque. Other than the status of a few sensors, the only interesting thing was engine load and the ability to read trouble codes. With the Edge, I expect a lot more detail. I've also used the adapter with my laptop and various Windows software. Torque was far better than everything else I tried. The adapter I got, by the way, was this cheap one: http://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Products-Bluetooth-diagnostics-compatible/dp/B005NLQAHS Are you planning to use an Android or iPhone with the bluetooth OBD2 adapter? WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Yeah, one of the things I always see is problems with access to the codes for diagnostics. Generally have to pay for that, rather than being able to look up a service manual or a forum ( ); wealth of info locked away from us! I am curious about your experience with power draw on this particular bluetooth adapter. Does it go to sleep on "inactivity", or does it continue to draw power even after engine shutdown? Some of these devices have caused battery rundowns when left plugged in.
jay
There is a constant power draw with this adapter and I wouldn't leave it attached unattended with the engine off. For the really fancy stuff, you need a specialized Ford diagnostic. When I get a chance, I'll post some screenshots from Torque, though.
