JRB
I have a whining noise of some sorts that gets louder when I accelerate. The only time I can tell it does this other than accelerating has been going down a hill. I had thought this was possibly the power steering belt. I had it replaced along with the drive belt and the noise quit, but now after a few months, the noise has returned. I had a dealer check it out and I was told it was a bearing in the transmission. I thought it was strange that the noise went away when I had the belt replaced and now it is back. The vehicle is an ALL-wheel Drive 08 Edge. Does anyone have any idea? NatG
I would think maybe the PTU in the AWD system. Does the sound go away at a particular speed?
JRB
Not really, except when the engine covers up the noise.
samf727
I notice a whining in my 2011 FWD SEL .. Noticably when you just tip on the throttle to begin accelerating - whines under power. Possibly a related issue? I have no idea, but transmission shifts seems to be getting clunkier and more awkward/uncomfortable.

See following thread and listen to the audio and let me know if sound is the same. http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/12682-2011-mkx-humwhine/
JRB
I took it to a local garage and the mechanic told me it was the PTU. I had them replace it and the noise is gone. Edited July 14, 2013 by JRB
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Glad it is fixed! Did it sound similar to teknowiz's sound clip? TIA.
JRB
Glad it is fixed! Did it sound similar to teknowiz's sound clip? TIA. I can't really hear the noise that well. The whining from my PTU was very distinct.
Klatre
I have a 2011 ford edge limited. About 1 year ago i had my front differential changed to a used one around 60k miles. About a week after I got the car back I was driving and the car was shifting delayed, erratic and struggling to accelerate. I check all my fluid levels transmission fluid was empty. I have checked all the fluids maybe about 3 weeks before the replacement differential and it had everything had fluid no leaks either. When replacing the front differential does it leak out transmission fluid? now I have a whining noise when the vehicle is cold. I don’t really hear it when the vehicle is warm. Except sometimes while in the middle of a curve.vehicle struggles to accelerate from 0-40mph. After 40 vehicle accelerates fine.if I was to floor it. The vehicle would high rpm’s and shift late. I don’t have any odm lights on. If anyone got any suggestions on how I can check if it’s the differential or transmission I would appreciate it or any other parts that may cause theses issues.
