cc70415
Hi Everyone, Last night I was backing out of my driveway and ended up scraping my back driver's side wheel on a sharp piece of stone that was sticking out. I have a 2011 Edge limited and it will only be a year old this coming december. I bought the Tirecare tire and wheel insurance agreement with the dealership. After reading I know this probably will not be covered and I see a new wheel may be close to $600 that i cannot spend right now. I was considering calling my salesman that sold me the car and going in to the dealership today and saying while driving something kicked up from a truck on the highway and took chunks out of my wheel, since that may then be covered. Does anyone have any opinions? I know its a long shot but the car is not even a year old and i have to be paying an extra $530 for 5 year coverage for something! Also...I was VERY disappointed to see that the wheel itself is only sprayed the chrome coloring because the under layer for the wheel is white and is showing underneath the chrome paint job that they did...so the wheels arent even really what they say they are???! help pleaseee! Thank you!
c_bova
they are chrome clad which is a fancy for a plastic chrome hub glued to an aluminum wheel. Unfortunately it isn't as easy as taking that glued portion off. If I were you I'd just say you hit something on the road that scratched it. akirby
They are real chrome, not just painted.
cc70415
ok thank you! just wouldnt think real chrome would scratch off a thin layer that seems like chrome paint....with white showing underneath not chrome.. do you think they may honor the insurance package if i say it was from something on the road that bounced into the wheel? I just cannot believe the damage it did to the wheel and how a layer would come off leaving something showing underneath the chrome. thanks! Chrome cladding doesn't stick as well to plastic as it does to steel but the advantage is it's lighter and it won't pit or corrode. But it's hard to repair. I don't know what the wheel policy covers but it won't hurt to ask.

JOEHIO
If they won't replace, how about trying your insurance.
Edgieguy
Do it! Hit something on the road. You don't have to say what road.. your driveway is like a road... it's a road from your street to your garage, right? And you did hit something while you were driving so you're not lying there either. What can they say? You got a 50/50 shot.
kc300c
If the dealer / warranty won't cover the repair/replacement, take it to a wheel repair service. They specialize in this kind of work and may be able to fix it. I took my son's car to one when he scraped a curb with his custom black painted rims. The gouges went all of the way around (guess he never thought to turn the steering wheel or to hit the brakes). They were able to take out and buff smooth the aluminum then touched up the paint. If you look at the rim up very close and you knew what to look for, you can see some signs of the repair, but just barely. Heck of a lot less expensive than $400. to replace it. RJG
Check E Bay. Probably a couple hundred for OEM take offs. This your wheel? Used..... http://www.ebay.com/...5b7b192&vxp=mtr Edited November 20, 2012 by RJG
