AmyLovesHerEdge
Hi, 2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD. This just started to happen this past weekend. I park the car and put it into Park. When I shut the car off.... a warning sign comes on and says "Shift to Park". This appears on the left of the speedometer screen. The MFT screens won't turn off and the seat will not return to the start position like it normally does. If I hit the gear shift with the heel of my hand, sometimes this will fix it and everything shuts off. I tried doing a hard reboot of the MyFordTouch computer by pulling the fuse, but it is still doing it. Not sure why it is doing this. It has to know it is in Park, because I don't think you can shut the car off unless it's in Park. I tried doing a search here to see if anybody ever heard of this. Couldn't find anything. Thanks, Amy
Tacyon
there most likely is a sensor (switch or solid state sensor) that detects when the transmission is in park .. it's either come lose or has failed.... either way it's a dealership thing to replace. but I'm not telling you anything you probably hadn't already thought. cmillz1331
yeah I would have the dealer check it out...you said hitting the gear shift slightly fixes the problem so a sensor is probably not working correctly or its not shifting completely into park...good luck! Waldo
I agree it's a sensor in the shifter. Yes you can turn off the car when it's not in park. What else would you do if you're throttle got stuck?

bac2010
This just started happening to me this past week - 2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD also. I'll have to get it checked out at the dealer during the next oil change. I nudge the shifter and the message disappears and the seat returns to its correct position. Amy - any resolution to the problem?
bluerazr
I am having this issue as well on my 2011 Edge limited. What happened with previous user repairs?
Tanya Smith
I'll add mine to the list - same exact thing. All of a sudden this past week, 2011 Ford Edge Limited parked but light comes on saying "shift to park". But I have one other issue too that started first --- light comes on saying left rear door is open when it's not. Took it to the dealer here and had the car sit all day long without anyone taking a look at it. Taking it back later this week. bac2010
I brought my 2011 Edge to the dealer for this issue but they were not able to recreate the problem - so no fix. I still have the problem which started in October 2012. I just wiggle the shifter and the message goes away. I find if you firmly shift to park, the message normally doesn't appear. I'll see if I can get the problem to duplicate itself for the next oil change. Anyone who had the problem fixed, please post the part number and what they did to correct it. Thanks. Don't you just love how the dealer "can't recreate the problem"? I have had multiple problems with my edge that the dealer said this to me and the problem occurred again while leaving their lot....I would try to get it checked out somewhere else. I have found that Ford dealers don't like to find problems that they will end up having to fix.
AmyLovesHerEdge
I wrote the original post for this forum about 10 months ago. Still have the problem. Dealer says they can't duplicate the problem. I figured out what's going on when this happens: When this happens: If you shift the shifter in Park. Notice that the red "P" park indicator on the center speedometer is not lit. Leave the shifter in Park, but if you squeeze the chrome switch on the shifter a couple of times the Park light will come on and the warning lights shutdown and the seat returns. I think it's just in the gear shift switch. (the one you squeeze on the shifter to shift gears) Sometimes you have to squeeze it 2 or 3 times before it works, but it fixes it every time for me. I'm taking the car back in to the dealer in July to show them this. I'll let you know what they find. Amy

Amy I have this same problem on my 2012 Ford Edge Sport and have arrived at the same conclusion as you - it is related to the button on the shifter. If I press it a few times and/or push the shifter lever a little more forward towards the dash, the shift to park warning will go off. Please let me know if you find a real fix. predgegirl
Dito here too!! 2012 Limited Edge... I did notice that then the "P" doesn't light up red on the dash, it will give me the message. Going to try the shift button "trick" to see if that works for me. Taking mine to dealer tomorrow, lets see if it will happen. I will mention it to them.
Dingo
They have to replace the shifter.
AmyLovesHerEdge
Dealer finally said Ford now has a service fix. SSM44164. They adjusted the gear shift linkage. This actually lasted 5 days, but now it is doing it again. At least now I figured out how to play with the switch on the gear shift to get it into Park. I have to take it back in again anyway. They were supposed to have fixed the backup warning lines on the rear camera. They did but it only lasted one day. At least so far, the Power Transfer Unit is no longer leaking tranny fluid in my garage since they replaced it. The car only has 20,000 miles. I'm thinking about dumping it. The transmission is starting to shift real rough from 1st into 2nd. Too bad. I loved the car when I first got it. Amy
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
So they didn't actually replace the shifter assembly? Dingo pointed out that replacement is necessary for a fix. Your Sync etc up to date on versions? An update may fix the lines issue, unless the camera has been bumped hard enough to be compromised. http://fordsyncforum.com/topic/3327-backup-camera-missing-active-and-fixed-lines/?do=findComment&comment=13321 Is yours any early 2011 model? Tanya Smith
My shifter had to be replaced to fix this issue after I'd gone in twice for the problem.
AmyLovesHerEdge
Hi, WWWPerfA_ZN0W. Dealer updated Sync first before working on the car. Supposed to have the latest version. Yes, it's an early model. Manufactured late Oct. - early Nov. 2010. It's classified as a 2011 model. Thanks Tanya. I'm going back in. The Dealer repair shop showed me the Ford service bulletin. It said simply to adjust the linkage. I'm printing this forum topic out to show them. My biggest concern is now is the transmission. It is shifting rough in the low gears. It sometimes bangs like you were popping a clutch in the old days. Definitely didn't act this way the first 20,000 miles and can't be good for the car. WWWPerfA_ZN0W
A PCM reflash ala TSB 13-03-18 may fix the harsh shifting problem.
markyoungsmagic
Same here with 2012 Edge Limited, doesn't happen often but irritating when it does. Found it happens more often when parking on a hill. Hope the dealer can re-create the problem so they'll fix it.
aviatrjim
My 2011 Edge Limited just hit the 50,000 mile mark. For the past two weeks, intermittently, the message "shift to park" has appeared after pushing the Start/Stop button for shutdown. Bumping the shifter several times would temporarily get rid of message. Finally, had a chance to take it to Ford Dealer and was diagnosed that the shifter cable needed to be adjusted. Three days later, same message appears, take car back to Ford Dealer and they cannot get a fault code to show. The CSR tries to tell me I am not operating the trigger mechanism on my shifter correctly. Evidently he has forgotten about the "shift to park" message and is concentrating on the orange P symbol that does extinguish when you press the trigger on the shifter. Finally convinced CSR this is a known problem on this vehicle, dealership has ordered a new shifter for my Edge and I am awaiting install. Thanks Forum for sharing your experiences! markyoungsmagic
Can anyone that had the shifter replaced confirm that the issue hasn't returned and it fixed the issue permanently? My 2012 Edge LTD is at the dealer for the Fifth time (3 visits to one dealer 2nd visit to another dealer). The cable was adjusted twice. I need this to be resolved. MurphieNB
My 2012 Edge Limited has started doing the same thing. Have not yet taken it to the dealer. I googled the topic, and found this statement in a service bulletin. Also noted the same topic in an Explorer forum. "BCM 6535 - 2011 - 2013 Edge/ MKX/ Explorer ”Shift To Park”Message While In Park2011 - 2013 Edge/ MKX/ Explorer “Shift To Park” message may be displayed with the shifter in Park if the shift cable is not correctly adjusted. Follow the shift cable adjustment procedure in the work shop manual section 307-05 to correct this condition. Remember that the shift cable adjustment is always done with both the shifter and transmission in Drive."
markyoungsmagic
Well, FINALLY (after 5 or 6 visits to two different dealers) got the shifter replaced, it's been almost a month and no "Shift to Park" issue so far, that's the longest period without the issue since it started last October. I think after the second trip Ford should be required to reimburse you for your time and trouble. Issues shouldn't take 5 or 6 visits to resolve, especially when you tell them it's a known issue and that replacing the shifter seems to be the only resolution.
