cmillz1331
I live in Ohio and I want new black wheels for my edge but don't really want to have to take them off after every summer and wait until spring to put them back on.....any way around this or do I just have to deal with the stocks for the winter? cmillz1331
I was recently told that aftermarket wheels can withstand snow and salt during the winter time without any damage as long as you clean them regularly. Is this true??
c_bova
any wheel can with stand snow and salt as long as you maintain them and keep them clean. salt will damage any wheel that it sits on for to long, aftermarket or not. JOEHIO
I might be anal, but I wax my rims (wheels) at least 3 times a year. Years ago, had aftermarkets, and never had a problem.............BUT, if you don't keep them clean, whey will get mucked up !
cmillz1331
okay thanks cause i would really love to get new wheels but it would be annoying to take them off for the winter. what wax do you use for your wheels?
cmillz1331
so just want some opinions.....I'm looking at the KMC rockstar wheels but should I go with the XD series or the car series? Thanks
c_bova
you can use any wax you would use on your paint, there are some wheel waxes but since most wheels now a days are clear coated you can use the same thing as you use on your car. cmillz1331
okay thanks that helps. I'm looking to save up money to get 20" kmc rockstar wheels and would like to just keep them on all year long
JOEHIO
When waxiing the wheels, first I use a wax with a cleaner in it, to remove any dirt/brake dust that might be embedded, then I use either Meguires Gold, or a Synthetic wax, like Mothers. cmillz1331
sounds good. I'll check out these products for sure once I get new wheels. thanks
YNOT
You can certainly run aftermarket wheels in the winter but why would you? I have custom wheels for all three of my cars and I swap back to the stock wheels every fall (October-ish) and run my stock wheels in the winter months. Keeping aftermarket wheels clean is tough when it's cold outside...but my bigger fear is sliding into a curb with them and tearing them up. A likely thing in the snow and ice. It's up to you, but when spending $1800 to 2500.00 a set on aftermarket wheels/tires, I'd take them off in the winter and keep them nicer for a longer time. cmillz1331
Good point....I'm just debating what I want to do with my wheel situation...I want new wheels but I'm afraid of the costs down the line and I would probably stay with the same size anyway.....maybe ill just end up painting my stock wheels... YNOT
I guess it all comes down to how picky you are and how long you want them to last. I bought a set of chrome 20's back in 2006 for our Mercury Mariner. Changed them out every winter and they still look like new...6 years later. In fact, I'm thinking of using them as my "winter wheels" for our Edge Sport so as to keep the Sport wheels new for the next several years. The old chrome 20's have served me well for 6 years on our Mariner and I don't have the budget for a new set of custom wheels for the new Edge right now...plus I really like the stock 22's. cmillz1331
I'm probably just going to do a DIY project to paint the grille and wheels black and then get new black wheels next spring
