Arunepoon
Hey folks, just joined the forum. My name is Mike and I'm from southern California. I have a 2012 Ford Edge SEL w/ AWD. Got the AWD for snowboarding trips. Anyone have experience with the AWD in the snow? How's the traction? What kind of tires do you use? wlepse
We drove in snow several times last season on the stock all seasons. I would say it was similar to my previous Subaru. You could always get to where you wanted to go but you knew there was wheel slip happening. In our Audi you don't get the same sensation of wheel slippage. This year if I can find a good deal on a set we will be picking up a set of dedicated snows. While we were always able to get going the all seasons did leave a bit to be desired in turning and braking in messy conditions.
Scorpio
I went with a separate set of 17" wheels + dedicated snow tires for our brutal Canadian winters and got through some heavy blizzards without much trouble. For occasional light snow duty though the stock all seasons+awd should be fine.
EdgeGermany
I am using 18" wheels and pirelli snow tires during Bavarian winter. Excellent handling on slippery roads. I noticed bad handling of the 22" wheels on wet cornering during a driver training.
Limited59
I think it's more about how you drive than what. I've never owned a two wheel drive vehicle.... Always Jeeps, 4x4 half tons and AWD SUVs. And I've driven successfully and safely in every condition there is. That being said, I've also passed countless AWD/4WD vehicles upside down in the ditch on a winter's day. Traction for acceleration is going to be there at all times.... But that's where the benefits end. Don't become overconfident just because you have an AWD badge on the lift gate. That's the quickest way to become rubber side up. JOEHIO
Had 4 wheel drive Explorers and now my AWD MKX. Never had a problem because I took it slow in snow. Hell,I had rear wheel drive cars years ago, and got around. Safe driving.
