MrHappy
I posted this in the general forum but noticed this one (sorry for the double post). Long story short, my wife's 2011 AWD Sport with the 22s is making a clicking noise (sounds like it's coming from the front wheels or perhaps the break assembly) when she makes a left turn. Once the wheel straightens out it stops immediately. I checked for rubbing and found no signs. It sounds like a metallic clip in a bicycle wheel spoke almost and it's happening on both front sides. We're going to make a trip to the dealer when time allows but if anyone has any ideas to check for I'd really appreciate it. The turns don't have to be hard, just any left turn regardless of speed or tightness of the turn. Thanks in advance for any help.
cv27
Many of us had a similar problem with 2008 Edges. The problem then was a defect in the glue process of applying the chrome cladding to the wheel. The noise happened only when turning. Ford replaced all my wheels with versions with the correction. Might want to keep that in mind when you talk to your dealer.
MrHappy
I noticed that in a few threads here, thank you. The issue with ours is that the 22s are a single piece aluminum wheel (no cladding) so I can't figure out what is actually making that noise. Just hate going to the dealer to be told it couldn't be reproduced or that it's "normal" when clearly it isn't.
joshly
Have you had a solution to this?? I have taken my Sport to the dealer 5 times now any they still haven't resolved it! They have changed the T rod and this past time the breaks. Ā I am so frustrated.
MrHappy
Nope. For some reason when they rotated the tires the noise stopped (for now)
joshly
They have rotated the tires, changed the T rod, cleaned the breaks ... NOTHING. ANd the most annoying thing is they always claim to have fixed it?? Ford service has been BRUTAL.
So-Cal Edge
Usually on front wheel drive cars, the axle boots can become cracked or torn and the grease will seep out during driving. The noise can be from the axle assembly or CV (constant velocity) joint and would occur only when turning at full left or right I.E. a U-turn. Just an idea but worth looking at. joshly
Thanks i'll mention that when I take my Edge in for servicing this week. Fingers crossed.
MrHappy
Any update? The noise is back again when turning to the left and I noticed 2 small drip spots in the garage in front passenger area under the engine (about as far back as the front wheels). Frustrating. blankster
Any corrosion on the lug bolts or the rotor cap or hub area where the wheel mounts? Rust/corrosion on some of those surfaces can cause a clicking from the wheels.
MrHappy
None on the lugs, I checked that previously but I'll try to take a peek at the rest today. I would have assumed if it was bad enough to cause that during the rotation the dealer would have addressed it but then again, with dealer service I shouldn't assume anything. Small 2 leaks are also a concern. Anyone have a good dealer in NE Ohio?
Spoolin
My 2011 AWD Sport does the exact same thing. Havnt mentioned it yet as its more of a nuisance then anything.
MrHappy
Do you notice if your sport has the 2 small drip spots when it's been parked overnight in the front/passenger area under the engine about in line with the wheel? Think we might need to visit a different dealer because now the clicking is REALLY bad.
MrHappy
Back in the shop. They are ordering a new CV joint or axle assembly depending on what Ford says (in contact with their techs since no other items appear worn or failed). The dripping was apparently unrelated. I'll keep this thread posted with updates when the parts arrive and the service is complete if anyone is still watching.
WWWPerfA_ZN0W
Quite a journey for you. Hope you get a fix once and for all!
MrHappy
So far so good. For anyone who has the clicking sound, we had a "noisy" CV joint. The entire right front axle / halfshaft assembly was replaced after the tech spoke with Ford's hotline. So far no noise but I'll report back if anything changes. Ā The drips ended up with half the engine being torn down. Power steering lines were replaced as well as multiple gaskets on the engine block, valve covers resealed and a few other seals were replaced. (I like their thoroughness.) Ā Most work we've ever needed on our Fords... yikes. But hey, if it fixed the issue(s) I'm good
MrHappy
Less than a year later and front left has now failed with less than 30K miles. This vehicle has been one of the least reliable I have ever owned and will probably be my last Ford.
2011edgese
Im experiencing the same. 2011 edge se. Turning or u turns makes a clicking metallic noise. Driving straight is fine. Im suspecting the axle or cv joint on the front right. How much has the dealer charged for this replacement? And can it be driving even though the noise is there? Its my daily driver and no performance issues except for the click noise.
PaulSchott
Same thing on a FWD 2007. New front axles and it's fixed. I replaced both even thought only the drivers side was bad. It's nice when the noise goes away.
2011edgese
Was it easy to do?
