Opening Back Doors?

Recommended Posts

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, is there no way for someone sitting in the back of an Edge to open their door if it isn't unlocked? Seems very odd to me as most cars you can open the door if it is locked. The door would unlock automatically when the handle is triggered.

Also, I've noticed none of the doors lock automatically when the car is started and put in motion?

Sorry for the dumb questions. I just realized these things on my 2012 Ford Edge (Limited). They seem like common features on other cars I've driven or been in.

I think there are settings for it in the cluster but to be honest I think it only locks teh doors above a certain speed I don't think it automatically unlocks. As for getting out of the back when locked, you can pull up on the pin to unlock the door then use the door handle like normal. If this doesn't work check to make sure someone didn't bump the child safety lock to disable the door lever.

Thanks for your response. I didn't see an option in regards to the doors locking at a certain speed. I have to check again but believe I looked everywhere under settings. Pulling up the lock works in regards to opening the back. I realized over the weekend after having family in the back everyone was use to simply opening the handle and having the doors open even if it was locked. oh well, no big deal, just a tad annoying :)

On my Limited the doors dont automatically lock until I hit about 20mph and they unlock when I exit the car (I think thats when it happens). There are settings that will enable the autolocking and unlocking. Access them through Settings --> Vehicle --> Locks and turn them On.

Yeah but I think the unlock only works after teh driver opens the door. So it is still a tad inconvienent if you are dropping someone off. But I guess you could always set it to not autolock.

I never reallized it until just now. You are right. I always have to unlock the doors after my wife runs into the commissary for something and comes back. It does only unlock when the drivers opens their door. I wish all the doors would unlock when you open the drivers side door with the hand sensor. I thought there was a setting for that, but I didnt see anything. I always open the door for my wife, so that unlocks everything (I am the primary driver, so she is in the co-pilot seat most of the time).

Autolock will lock the doors automatically above 20 mph or so. Autounlock will unlock the doors automatically when the car is put into Park and the driver's door is opened (key may have to be removed also - not sure). If you don't like the unlock then just disable the autolocks altogether and they won't be locked.

The front doors on all Fords (that I know of at least) will open even if locked. Rear doors do not - presumably due to child safety (in case you're not using the child safety locks. But as pointed out, just pull up on the lock to unlock.

My daughter's Focus is strange in that you pull once on the rear door handle to unlock, then pull again to open. Takes some getting used to but it is more convenient than finding and pulling up on the lock - if you remember that's how it works. It was a little disconcerting on the test drive. Also - there is only one lock button in the center of the dash - it toggles. Also different.

I dont mind the autolock, but I dont like having to unlock the back doors or constantly tell passengers in the back seat they have to unlock the door so they can get out. Not something I will lose sleep over but it is annoying.

I did notice sometimes the remote key will automatically unlock all the doors as it should when I walk up to the car, but on few occassions it has only unlocked my door. Thus, forcing me to manually unlock all doors. Today it has beentemperamental. I've had to unlock the drivers side door via the unlock button on the keyless entry remote at least 4 times today. First, time that has happened.

It is odd the lock settings can't be accessed via the touch screen where other settings are located.

I actually prefer this...usually the door handles are in plain sight or are easy to find in the dark or an emergency. Seems like a safer method of doing it should the driver be knocked out and can't open their door.

Out of curiosity, what vehicles have you owned where the rear doors will automatically unlock when the rear interior door handle is pulled? I've only ever owned Fords, but all of them have required the rear doors be unlocked before the interior handle will open them.

In default form, the remote keyfob will unlock the driver's door with one click and all four doors with a second click.

It is odd the lock settings can't be accessed via the touch screen where other settings are located.

Cellbine posted a picture a few posts up of the location of the keyfob configuration in the menu. You can choose whether one click of the keyfob's unlock button unlocks just the driver's door or all four doors.

Did the dealer not go over all of this stuff with you upon delivery?

My BMW lets you open the back doors without having the driver unlock it. Any other car I've been in had the lock feature on the passenger side door, so the passenger could unlock it themselves.

In regards to the remote. I wasn't referring to actually clicking on it. Sorry, I was referring to when you walk up to the door with the key in your hands or pocket. The door unlocks automatically once the remote is within close enough range of the door.

The dealer went over some of the things. But nothing having to do with passengers being trapped inside the back of the car unless you unlock the doors.

The Edge is very quirky sometimes, especially with all the technology. I (as many others) encounter endless glitches and weird things which happen. That's an different topic though :)

If your remote is set to only unlock the driver door on the first press, and all the door on the second press, then the driver door will behave the same way. That is:

If you touch the driver door to unlock the door, only the driver door unlock

If you touch the passenger door to unlock the door however, then all the door will unlocks.

This gives the impression of the car misbehaving ( two different result caused by two very similar actions)

The solution is to set the remote to unlock all doors with one click (hold lock and unlock for four seconds until the signal light flashes). In this setting, touching the driver door will unlock all doors.

2011 ford edge while car is in motion rear doors can be open. when the car is running should all the doors be locked?

Hey ahgoins1,

According to pg. 122 of the 3rd printing of your owner's manual (find it here):

Autolock feature (if enabled)

The autolock feature will lock all the doors when:

• all the doors are closed,

• the ignition is on,

• you shift into any gear putting the vehicle in motion, and

• the vehicle attains a speed greater than 12 mph (20 km/h).

Let me know if you have questions.

Todd
