Navigation System - Removal / Modification /rca out?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I have a awesome stereo system left over from my landrover discovery (which i gave to my mom when i got the edge) and i wanted to take my amps and subwoofers from that and put it in my edge. First - i was wondering if anyone has removed the sirius dvd navigation system head unit from the dash. I was wondering if any one had pics of the rear of the unit, or if anyone knows who manufactured it. Delco? I was wondering if it possible had RCA output, if it has an amp in it for the stock audiophile system, or if the system is powered by a external amp. That would be favorable, because then i could just take the pre-amp signal out of the unit and redirect it into my amps. The rear subwoofer has its own amp, so im assuming it has some type of pre-amp out - possibly only subwoofer output. Any help would be much appreciated! and pics would be great.

Ford's head units don't normally have pre-amp outs except for the subwoofer. Your best bet is a stereo shop or Crutchfield - they have the necessary wiring harnesses and instructions to connect an aftermarket amp to the factory head unit. You'll probably need speaker level inputs or converters.

^agreed! Usually no rca outs on factory heads. Call crutchfield and ask if they have a harness. They're usually very helpful with all questions including removal of head unit.

Just to be clear, only speakers you want to add is subs?

I'm surprised nobody has wanted to add tweets up high on doors panels. Would make a huge difference in front stage.

Just a thought... sell head unit to someone here and get new head? Thats what I would have done... in my younger days.

Thanks for the reply. Well I would sell the head unit but i have my edge on a lease (gasp). I am very good at stealth installing and have about 2grand worth of high end amps, subwoofers, and speakers just sitting in my garage. After listening to the "audiophile" system ford installs, i was looking into options for the best way to keep the dvd navigation unit they provide (from pioneer).

I was just trying to gather information as to if the head unit that comes with the ford is amplified internally, or perhaps has a small amp mounted somewhere else in the car for the 9 speakers. I know the subwoofer has a pre-amp output already. Looks as if my best bet would be to rip it out and start testing with my multi-meter. Im pretty sure i will just have to bite the bullet and get a line out converter. Its just that i will lose some signal quality :-( ahh well thats what i get for leasing - you cant make it your own.

I plan on ripping out the entire system and adding mine into it this weekend, i will take alot of pics if anyone is interested.

Ford navigation head units are made by Pioneer.
