Hey all. Newby here. So I purchased a 2011 Edge SEL 4 weeks ago from a local used car dealer. I've actually purchased cars from them before and have always had nothing but great things to say about them....till now.
First, when I bought it the sync was working for a good 4-5 days. Then intermittently it would come and go. Now it's to the point where it simply just keeps "shutting down to save battery" or whatever the wording is when the black screen of death shows. I did some poking around online and found (so I thought) that my sync had an extended warranty! I called a local Ford dealer here in CT (Monaco in Glastonbury) and asked if it was in fact under the extended warranty. Much to my delight, I was told by their person who books service calls that it was! This was last week. So yesterday I called again just to make sure it was ok if I dropped it off yesterday rather than today because w/ 2 young kids, it's not so easy to get them off to school and have time drop off a vehicle and then drop the wifey back home and then get to work. While I was on the phone with this other service person, I asked her if she was absolutely sure that this was covered and she gave me a definitive YES as long as it was in fact the APIM. Exciting stuff, right? I drop it off last night. I get a call this morning from another person who said they needed to get the ok from me that if in fact it isn't the APIM (which is covered...his words!!), I'd have to pay the $105 diagnosis charge. Of course I say yes because I'm 100% sure it's the APIM. 2:00 rolls around and my phone rings. Good news! It is the APIM. Bad news, it's not covered under the extended warranty. Huh?! The Edge is 2011, so the extended warranty was only good until 2016. I asked how could none of the 3 people (himself included) NOT know and NOT tell me this before I dropped the car off (and him this morning)?!?! Ok....
I call the used car dealer that I bought the car from. Tell him what's happening. He tells me that he'll order the part and have one of his guys install for me and all I'd have to pay for is the part itself....you know...a good $600.
Here's what the DMV in CT has to say about warranties on used cars:
The law covers mechanical and operational defects at the time of purchase, if the owner has met all of the following conditions:
The owner has paid at least $3,000 for the vehicle.
The vehicle is six years old or less.
The vehicle is used for personal purposes or family or household use.
The dealer must repair the vehicle at no charge up to 30 days (or 1,500 miles) after the purchase date if the owner paid at least $3,000, and up to 60 days (or 3,000 miles) after the purchase date if the owner paid at least $5,000.
My question, in a very long about way of getting to it is; because the sync not only controls the radio, but it also controls the heat and ac, is it considered mechanical? Further, when the screen goes off, the drivers side airbag light comes up on the dash. Is that just a little quirk, or does the APIM/sync actually have something to do with the airbags? If so, then I would think that would HAVE to be considered mechanical, no? ANY help/guidance anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks very much in advance!
Oh, and one last thing. Other than the sync issue, this is BY FAR one of the greatest driving vehicles I've ever owned. LOVE it to death! :-)
