..and the MKX has a glove box light. I don't understand why Ford doesn't make that standard equipment in all vehicles. In my '98 Explorer I wired up a light with a push compression switch. Still working on how to get a permanent light in the Edge. I wonder if an MKX light could be retro'ed into an Edge. EDIT: I spoke too soon. Found a thread about wiring up a light in the glove box.

I'm 58 and like my Edge Limited AWD. I suppose I could have bought and MKX but I just couldn't justify the additional cost for pretty much the same vehicle in a Ford. MKX's are nice tho!! For years my 90 year old mother-in-law drove the old style big boxy '94 Town Car Signature Series. Man, that monster weighed prolly 3000lbs and was about 15' long!! Like driving your couch. She's now in a Lexus GS. Go figure.

My Edge is out of warranty so there no issue there, but I DO NOT intend to change my 5k mile oil/filter interval. I think 20k miles between changes is excessive. But for fleet service and perhaps those on a limited budget, it might work.

Mobil 1 has recently introduced a new full synthetic oil that they say is good for 20k miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Here is the page for it: https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-annual-protection They are stating that it meets or exceeds all OEM requirements. It is getting a lot of chatter on the other car boards and there is a few pages on it on the BITOG site. I searched here and did not find any discussions on it. I was wondering of anyone had any experience with this yet. Their site states that it meets the Ford Spec WSS-M2C947-A (along with the GM specs). They also advertise a limited warranty for the 20k/1 year claim. If you do a search there for providers it gives a list of where it can be found. That includes WalMart, although when doing search directly at WM's site there is no mention of M1 AP being available. Some postings in the BITOG site mention that it has been found at some WM locations for about $50 for a 5qt jug. Personally, I am bit leery of oil going 20k miles although I admit I am a fan of M1 and their filters. I would have to see or hear first hand accounts of someone going 20k miles until an oil change before I would consider it. My regular oil change is M1 Extended Performance 5w-20 with a M1 Extended Performance filter changed at 5k intervals. Is anyone thinking about going to full 20k oil changes? It would be interesting to see the oil analysis info after 20k miles. Just interested in getting thoughts or feed back about 20k or 1 year oil change intervals. One a side note: Mobil is still advertising a $15 rebate if you purchase 5qts of any M1 oil product along with a M1 EP filter. The rebate runs through 5/31/17. I'm going to buy a jug and a filter just to get the rebate and use it when my next oil change comes along.

Mercedes Cross Bars installed!
chefduane replied to jrmynorcal's topic in Cargo, Hauling, Roof Racks & Towing
Those do look pretty slick. And high enough above the BAMR so no interference. If you don't mind my asking, what dealer did you get the side rails from? I haven't had any luck finding anyone to trade side rails for my rail inserts, so I may have to just purchase the rails. -
Replacing the ugly BLUE FORD EMBLEM
chefduane replied to olperez1's topic in Accessories & Modifications
hmmm... I am one of those guys that actually LIKES the Ford blue oval. I painted my front grill Tuxedo Black to match the rest of the car and left the front emblem as is. Its distinctive and stands out against black grill, and I really do like the Ford script in the blue oval. With the blacked out front grill, the chrome 22's, and the Blue Oval, it really is a pretty sharp look. But hey, that's just me - to each his own. -
What have you done to/with your Edge/MKX today?

Got my new Viofo A119 Dash Cam installed. Nice clean install, I must say. Used a fuse tap on driver kick panel fuse #41 for the switched connection. However, I think I have something not set correctly on the cam as I did a test run and am only recording audio. The cam seems to be operating fine but when I remove the microSD card and try to read it on my pc, I only get the audio portion. Hopefully just a setting or somesuch. EDIT/Solution: The default video recording format for the Viofo A119 is .mp4. The Windows 7 default video player format is .mov. If you try to play the file with Windows Media Play or the Win7 default viewer you will only get audio as I did above. I downloaded an .mp4 player from CNet and opened the file with the .mp4 viewer and all is well. I suppose you could make the Windows player default to .mp4's but then all the .mov's would be messed up. Since I will only be reviewing the Viofo .mp4 files if I have a traffic incident, I intend to leave things as they are and use the downloaded .mp4 viewer to watch the dash cam files. Hope this helps somebody with the same issue! -
Front Grill Paint - Opinions Wanted!

My '11 Edge is Tuxedo Black, Ford color code UH. Wouldn't the Sport black be the same as the other Edge black models, ie, UH Tuxedo Black? Maybe I am not understanding your question? At any rate, I got the primered grill inserts from Fairwayford.com and ordered 2 spray cans of Tuxedo Black UH from automotivetouchup.com. I also got a surface prep solution and some clear coat spray. Prepped, sprayed, and clearcoated them myself. Looks factory and I couldn't be happier. If the weather holds this weekend I'll try to post some pix. -
I am >this close< to drilling and tapping my PTU. I really don't want to do it but it looks like that might be the easiest way to do regular fluid changes. I just had my fluid changed - found a shop that would do it for $80 full synth Valvoline. I plan on yearly or 20k mile changes and the hole tap would make that a lot easier to do myself.

Anyone use a hydraulic floor jack to lift their Edge?

No problemo here. -

It did appear that you were saying that the pinch weld was used to jack the car. (Others inferred this also.) I was illustrating that that was not the case. And it is not the case. -

And both jacks have an indent or recess or slot (which ever word fits best) that the pinch weld settles into to lift the vehicle by the horizontal surfaces adjacent to the vertical pinch weld rail. You implied that the jack lifts solely by the pinch weld which could deform the pinch weld. If you take a look at the vid it might explain a little better what I am talking about. And since you were emotionally exasperated I guess the childish comments can be overlooked. So I take it back, you weren't completely a$$hole-ish. <- new word I just made up. -

Here is a vid that might illustrate things a little better. It's somewhat lengthy (17mins) but explains the concepts pretty clearly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dflOF9PirxA&t=660s -

Here is a picture of the OEM jack. It clearly has a deep, slotted recess that the pinch weld settles into and the horizontal surfaces of the jack lift the vehicle solely and completely by those surfaces. The pinch weld runs vertically along the underside of the frame rail and has horizontal surfaces interior and exterior adjacent to the weld. It is those surfaces that the OEM jack (and floor jack with puck adapter) uses to lift the vehicle. That's how it works. Don't know how to explain it any clearer. And many here have had the jack out of the trunk so please refrain being a complete a$$hole with the sarcastic comments and the childish 'sheesh' gibes. -
Interior Disaster - 2016 Ford Edge Sport
chefduane replied to Inkrypshun's topic in Interior, A.C., Heat, Interior Trim
What about the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan? Sounds very similar to US Lemon Laws. "Eligibility is easier in Canada. There's no 3-attempts-at-a-repair or 30-days-in-the-shop stipulations before a vehicle owner can seek restitution, which are common requirements in the US." This is per Bob Pierce - former provincial motor vehicle registrar who helped establish CAMVAP in 1994. Methinks your time might be better invested researching this option, rather than posting in a blog. Best of luck! http://www.wheels.ca/news/bought-a-lemon-car-heres-who-you-should-call/ -

chefduane replied to ben senise's topic in Wheels & Tires
Actually KLinNBC, I think it is exactly the opposite of that. The jack and puck tools as described above are designed to NOT have any weight on the edge on the pinch weld lest the weld fold over. What the jack does (and puck tools) is allow the weld to fit into the crease and then weight of the car is spread to each side of the rail of the weld via the flat surface of the jack/puck combination. -
Just as a point of reference.. In September of last year I purchased my 2011 Limited AWD w/ 301a package 65,389 miles from Park Place Lexus here in Plano, TX. for $17,999.

chefduane replied to ben senise's topic in Wheels & Tires
Yes, the slot is deep enough for the seam. I measured how high/deep the seam was before I cut the puck. Works great. The neighbor kid said the puck he gave me was signed by somebody named Wally Gretzker or something like that. I had to cut through the signature to get it to work. -

I have a couple of used hockey pucks from the neighbor kid. Cut a slot in it and it works great. See attached. -

Greetings From GA. Felling a little sour.
chefduane replied to Diamondntherough50's topic in Welcome Forum!
Make sure you document everything and keep your paperwork. Don't know the specifics of the particular Lemon Laws in Georgia but in general you may have grounds for redress if 1) have a substantial defect covered by the warranty that occurred within a certain period of time or a number of miles after purchase, and 2) not be fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts. Hopefully your dealer will address all your issues but don't hesitate to call the FMC Zone Manager if you don't get everything resolved. Usually just saying "My next call is to the Zone Manager" to a dealer will get some action. Dealers do not like ZM calls.
