The problem with not wanting the built in navigation is that Ford lumps it in with the option that gives remote start, heat/cooled front seats, etc. So there is no way to not get it if you want the other options. Therefore you pay ~$800 for navigation even if you don't want it and then Ford doesn't provide a method to update it. I would not buy a BMW since even there battery must be bought thru them and calibrated to work with the vehicle, any other manufacturer battery can be replaced by the owner for just the cost of the battery, they also say that you must buy the same replacement brand of tires.

There is reason to complain, the ~$800 we had to pay for the Sync3 Navigation sucks since it's out of date when you get your vehicle and there is no way to get the maps updated. Those other methods you suggest would only be partly acceptable if Ford were to pay each of us back the $800. They eat up your data and they don't work if you lose cell service. Also the Waze app doesn't yet work with applink until Ford comes out with a software update, good luck with that any time soon since they can't even figure out the simple update to the outdated maps. I also would bet that the Waze app will only work on the newest vehicles that have the "connect" hardware in them. I guess i'm just old fashion and I like getting what I payed for and not having to use something else since what I payed for doesn't work.

The updates should be free since we payed ~$800 for the Navigation and a Garmin can be had for $170 with free updates for life. Also on-line I found that Australia and a few other countries get free updates from Ford for 5 years. But a fee of say $50 wouldn't be to bad. I copied the A7 SD card to my computer when I got it for a backup for my 2014 Ford Taurus and the folder size is 14.5GB. Don't know why so large as the Garmin data file is only 4GB. They shouldn't be having Technical problems with downloading the Sync3 has been out for 3 model years already. If they can't fix their software then just let a High School or College Nerd have at it and it would be done in a day or so, Ford should at least tell us when there will be an update and how to get it. Does anyone know what navigation revision is in the 2018 vehicles? My 2017 is NA 1 15.

Wow all this new equipment changes and you still get the Sync3 Navigation that is 3years out of date and no way to update the maps, Yea Ford really is working on the right things (NOT), if you want a race car then why buy an SUV?
-
Whats not to like is the fact that I payed ~$800 for the Sync3 Navigation lumped in with other options that ended up being 2-3 years out of date when I got the vehicle. Sure there are several other ways to get GPS, I could put my 6 year old Garmin in the vehicle which is up to date by lifetime updates. The Navigation should have been up to date when the vehicle was sold and there should also be a method (free or paid) to get new updates. Ford has not provided any of these on a Sync3 system that has been out for 3 vehicle model years. That's what's not to like.

Using CarPlay or Android Auto eats up your data and doesn't work when your in the mountains or rural areas were there is no cell towers. Ford needs to step up and release a maps update for Sync3. The present maps is 2-3 years out of date, this is not acceptable for a Navigation system that we payed some $800 for. Ford should be paying each of us back the $800 since they are not providing updates for us in the USA. I read web sites that say Ford provides free updates in other countries for 5 years (Australia, UK) why do they not provide them for us in the USA?

SYNC3 V2.3 Official Release is Available

Using a USB worked for me on my 2017 Ford Edge Titanium. Make sure that your USB is formatted as fat32 and that the 3 files are in the root of the USB with no other files on the USB. Should have "SyncMyRide"-folder and "autoinstall.lst" and "DONTINDEX.MSA" files. -
SYNC3 V2.3 Official Release is Available

They haven't worked out the bugs.... Ford has been advertising wi-fi updates for 3 model years now, that's the problem (false advertising) they should have had the bugs worked out in 2015 before they advertised it for the 2016 vehicles. They also have not updated the Navigation maps in 2 years, they advertise that Sync3 is better than Sync2 MFT but the only thing better is the touch screen, what good is that if the maps are so old that they are useless. Also if you live in countries other than the USA you get map updates for free for the first 5 years. I like my 2017 Ford Edge Titanium in every respect except this Sync3 update problem. True you can use Car Play or AA but that eats up your data plan and it doesn't work if you don't have cell reception (mountain areas). -
SYNC3 V2.3 Official Release is Available

My point jmr061 is that if current vehicals are leaving the factory with v3.0 then we should get the official upgrade to v3.0. We should at least get the wi-fi update to v2.3, why does Ford put it out for USB update and not by wi-fi when they advertise how great this wi-fi updating is. -

I thought it sounded like the v2.2 update also, that's what we get from Ford lately, very little. -
If your SYNC is SYNC2 MFT then you can get the A8 map update on e-bay, I've bought the A6 and then A7 on e-bay and they work fine in my 2014 Ford Taurus. If your SYNC is SYNC3 than your like me (with 2017 Ford Edge) and out of luck since SYNC3 has been out now for 3 model years and there is no way for USA to get an update. If your overseas than a lot of those countries get updates for free for 5 years. Guess Ford don't care about us in the USA anymore.

Here's the information that I got from a chat on SYNC from owner.ford.com. What are the changes in the SYNC3 v2.3 that just came out? Cara says: This software release is the latest update in our continued efforts to improve system performance, device connectivity, and the overall SYNC experience. This software contains the following enhancements: •Updated voice recognition engine. •Navigation user interface improvements (if equipped). •Android Auto™ for supported devices. •Apple CarPlay™ for supported devices. Gerald says: Thanks, Do you know when it will be on the wi-fi update Cara says: It is currently being worked on and once it is available, the system will automatically start installing it and you will also be notified in your account. -
SYNC3 V2.3 Official Release is Available

The VHR worked for me. I have a 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with SYNC3 which doesn't have SYNC Connect. It's a convoluted process to setup and run and you need FordPass running on your phone. My 2014 Ford Taurus Limited with SYNC2 MFT is a lot simpler and phone can be just connected by bluetooth. Since some insurance companies (State Farm) give you discounts if you use the Ford VHR one would think that Ford would make it easier. Even once set up per Ford instructions it's hard to know if it ran ok till you check owner.ford.com. -

VHR, With Sync3 you are suppose to be able to get and schedule a VHR by your cell phone using the FordPass app. If you sign in to owner.ford.com and sign up your vehicle you can then get instructions there on how to do it. Select the "Service & Maintenance" section in the ford.owner.com site and then "vehicle health report", you will also need the FordPass app. on your cell phone. -

Update v2.3? what happend to the v3.0 that has been posted on other site's? owner.ford.com site shows the v2.3 update for my 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with Navigation is available but when I try to update via wi-fi in the vehicle it shows that v2.2 (which is loaded) is the latest. So much for Fords great advertising on the use of wi-fi for updates. -
The bluetooth connection in the car can make phone calls on a locked iPhone so I would think that the SIRI over Bluetooth should be able to be accessed on a locked Phone. Since Bluetooth pairing must be done initially when the phone is unlocked that would still keep the phone secure.
-
Sure you can make sure that SIRI is enabled when the phone is locked but then anybody that finds your phone can use almost anything on it thru SIRI, including making calls that you would then have to pay for if they are out of your plans range. Why lock the phone then? Ford should be able to work around this problem since they can access your music and other things thru the bluetooth link from car to phone while phone is locked and SIRI disabled.
-
Gen2-v3.8 added use of SIRI but phone needs to be unlocked to use it. Not to good to be going down highway and then still have to manually unlock phone re using the steering wheel button. Keep phone lock case someone steals it, slows them down. Also the revision did not add back the address book to destination that was taken out in rev. 3.7, needs to be put back in, just fixed for country field or ignore country field.
