2007 Lincoln MKX ABS Font Sensor Rings Cracked
drs120new replied to drs120new's topic in Brakes, Chassis & Suspension
Tone Ring Update: As I mentioned earlier, my mechanic installed 2 rebuilt Motorcraft axles. Put about 150 miles on the car and everything is a Go. Its funny, over the last year it felt like my transmission was slipping when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and only around the 3,000 RPM range, but since this fix everything is running like new again. Can't explain that one, but I'm sure its all related somehow. Enjoy the remainder of summer everyone !! -
2007 Lincoln MKX ABS Font Sensor Rings Cracked

Problem Update: After 100 miles driving with the ABS Pump fuse pulled, the wrench light came on the dashboard. I called my mechanic and he said its because the AWD system relies on wheel sensor data for anti-skid information. So, now I have 3 lights on the dashboard. I decided to to take the SUV to him this morning to change out the 2 half shafts before something else goes wrong. $600 for both half shafts replaced. I'll keep you posted on the repair as time goes by. -
2007 Lincoln MKX ABS Font Sensor Rings Cracked
drs120new replied to drs120new's topic in Brakes, Chassis & Suspension
I live in NY and just passed inspection, so I have 1 year to figure out what to do. I may just glue the ring on to pass inspection, then disable it again. This sucks. -
Good Afternoon Folks, I just disabled the ABS system in my 2007 Lincoln MKX because the brakes wouldn't function normally anymore. After reading sverla posts here, I decided to pull the ABS Pump fuse so that I can drive the car. After pulling off the front tires for a closer inspection, I noticed that BOTH front Sensor rings were cracked and slipping on the CV axle. So, here are my questions; 1) Can I drive the car without replacing the axles and just sacrifice the ABS functionality? 2) Is there a way that I can bond (glue) the ring on the axle to prevent the slip? Both axles are perfect except for the cracked sensor rings. I am not going to spend big $$ just to get back ABS which I hate in the first place if I don't have to. Have a Good Day !!

One year PTU Update: Everything is doing fine. 6,500 miles on new PTU and not one problem. Rides like new. Struts/Shocks Update: Front end feels like the car is brand new. Stick with all Motorcraft and you won't be dissapointed. Guys, You have been great. This forum rocks !!!

PTU Update: MKX rides beautiful so far with new PTU. Hoping to get many more years out of it. At 5,000 miles driven per year, I probably will. Struts & Suspension: Purchasing and installing brand new Motorcraft struts and bearings restored the factory new ride. No more clunks or rattles. Heated Seats: Decided not to dig. Not worth the $$ or the effort. I can put up with a cold ass for a couple of months. Cheers Folks and be good. Next update this summer.

More data on the heated seats issue: I removed the filters and cleaned them. Not very dirty. Still have the problem. Fan comes on for 5 seconds and shuts down. I tried in the cooling mode and fan runs fine and seats cool down. So, no problem with the filter or fans. Sound like a potential short in the heating elements?

PTU is doing just fine, no leaks, smells. Here's a coincidence though; before replacing the PTU, we had been getting roughly 11.3 mpg (mostly local driving) and after replacing the PTU and resetting the computer to relearn everything, we are now getting 14.8 mpg. My mechanic said that the PCM is programmed to adjust for wear and that relearning the system is beneficial when changing anything out in the drivetrain. So far it looks like he is correct. As far as the suspension, I replaced the front struts with everything Motorcraft as per you suggestion and the MKX rides like she is brand new. I am so happy !! I do have another issue though, maybe you guys can help. The 2 front heated seats have stopped working. I can hear the relay kick in, but the sound under the seat stops after 10 seconds or so. I read that the seats have a filter and if they are clogged the heat turns off. Question is, how do I get to the filter to inspect/replace? Cheers, hope everything is well !!!

One month PTU update: Everything is fine. No leaks, no smells, and the vehicle actually gets better gas mileage by 1-2 mpg. Anyhow, still need to do the struts. Once that is done, the MKX will be like new and ready to give me another 10 years of service. Be well everyone. Next PTU update, holiday time.

1 Week Update: Everything working fine. No smells, no leaks and believe or not gas mileage better by 1-2 mpg. Next update - 1 month. BTW, any suggestions on front struts? I need to replace mine. Strut bearings starting to clunk on driver's side.

Good Day My Forum Freinds, I picked up the Lincoln this morning from Dial Transmissions in Merrick, New York. The owner there Pat, is extremely honest and straightforward to work with. He installed the new PTU that I purchased online for $670, charged me 5 hours labor (at $110/hr), and also flushed and filled my transmission for another $125 including the Synthetic fluid. Total job was just under $1400. I know this is just Day 1, but no smell in the car and he said that my old PTU was totally cooked and was burning up the transaxle seals. I guess I just didn't catch the problem early enough. I am not too upset going the conservative approach of flush/fill/drain plug and vent kit. I learned a lot from this experience and hopefully folks with this same problem can learn from our posts. I plan to give a 1 month update unless a problem comes up and I will post earlier. I hope everyone enjoys the rest of their summer. Cheers, Dean

Enigma, that was the first question I asked and was told it would void the warranty of the new PTU. It was also suggested that I wait until the warranty period is up, and then install the drain. This was fairly easy and I figure I will put on less 15,000 miles in the 2 year period.

Good afternoon group, Here's an update on my Lincoln MKX PTU issue. I took the truck to a highly recommended transmission shop that only does warranty work for local dealers. The owner Pat, is going to replace the PTU as a favor for my regular mechanic that sends him a lot of business. Pat also was nice enough to allow me to purchase the PTU online ($650) and will only charge me 5 hours worth of labor to remove the old unit and install the new unit. I have an appointment next Thursday to have this work performed. In conversation with Pat, he was telling me that he does at least 2 of these a week. He told me that he could just replace the seal and fill it, but said that there would be no warranty for the work. The seal kit would run me $145 from Ford and he would charge me for 3 hours labor. Given the option of spending $500 more for a brand new part and only 2 more hours of labor, my decision was pretty simple. I got 10 years of service from the original PTU, so hopefully this will be my last one for this vehicle. Also, the part comes with a 2 year/24,000 mile warranty and Pat would warranty his labor for a year. Hopefully, next week at this time, I will be writing my final post regarding this POS PTU but will monitor this forum if someone needs any advice or any recommendations. Thanks again for everyone that helped through this problem !!!

I just want to inform anyone thinking about installing the vent kit (AG1Z-7034-A) into an Edge or MKX that the adapter plug that comes with the kit is the wrong size and that the job is a 2+ hour job that you need to work from the bottom and the top. I think if you are investing in that amount of labor, just buy a new PTU from EBAY or Ford online ($700) and have it installed. Make sure that you put a drain plug in before you install so that you can service it periodically.

We have been flushing and filling the PTU every 2-3 weeks, so I am too worried about it failing. I spoke with my mechanic this AM, and he told me that the new plug that fits into the PTU and attaches to the hose was not a tight fit and that he siliconed it in. I can't see how this can possibly work. 1) the surface would have to be totally clean and dry of fluid and 2) wouldn't be cured in 4 hours when he gave me the car back. This whole thing sucks. My next question to you smart guys out there is, what is involved with replacement of the passenger side seal? Does the PTU need to come out to do this? If so, I think I am going to throw in the towel and try to stick a Ford dealer as a trade.
